Indonesia: Aussie arrested amid claims of drunk, naked rampage

Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones: Aussie arrested amid claims of drunk, naked rampage in Indonesia
    April 28, 2023

Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones was detained by police in the Aceh province on the island of Simeulue, after his actions reportedly had an angry mob threatening to burn down his accommodation.

Mr Risby-Jones had reportedly been drinking from a vodka bottle before he stripped in his room at the Moon Beach Resort sometime after midnight on Thursday.

Police allege the 23-year-old, from Noosa in Queensland, left his room naked and assaulted a security officer who attempted to stop him.

Simeulue police chief Senior Commissioner Jatmiko told the Sydney Morning Herald that the security officer was allegedly hit in the neck and fell.

“He then went on to the street and disturbed passers-by,” Jatmiko alleged of Mr Risby-Jones.

Police also claim the young Aussie struck a passing motorcyclist and threw the motorcycle on the man as he fell into the gutter.

The police chief said the motorcyclist suffered a leg injury that required 50 stitches in hospital.

Jatmiko said onlookers were outraged at Mr Risby-Jones’ alleged behaviour and tried to set his accommodation alight.

“Luckily, local police and the village head managed to calm down the mob,” Jatmiko said.

Mr Risby-Jones, who was on a surfing holiday, is now facing charges under Article 351 of the Indonesian penal code and faces a maximum five years in prison if he is convicted of maltreatment resulting in serious physical injury.

He could also face charges under Islamic law, as the consumption and sale of alcohol is banned in Aceh.

Public canings are still in place in the area for morality offences, and people can be lashed for consuming alcohol.

Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones is “accused of an alcohol-fuelled, naked rampage outside a beachside resort that left a passer-by in hospital and prompted an angry mob of residents to threaten to burn down the hotel.”

Sharia law is enforced in Aceh, where the sale and consumption of alcohol is forbidden and public canings still occur for morality offences. As the report submitted to police by the motorcyclist's wife was about violence and not alcohol, Risby-Jones will not be investigated under Islamic law. However, police have warned they may still investigate the alcohol claims, and if they do, sharia law may be applied.
Aceh is the only Indonesian province where Sharia law is enforced. The pristine beaches and clean breaks at Simeulue makes the island popular with surfers.

whip him and whip him good!

corporal punishment for adultery and alcohol consumption as practiced by some of the more backward islamic theocracies under the banner of justice is petty and barbaric, but for a drunken rampage with violent abusive behaviour that outrages public decency in a very conservative society a good whipping is certainly an apt punishment, especially when there is an aussie yob on the receiving end.

Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones felt 'almost possessed' during alleged drunken rampage in Aceh
    29 April 2023

An Australian man accused of going on a drunken naked rampage in Indonesia's most conservative province says he felt "almost possessed" during the incident.

Mr Risby-Jones, 23, had been on a surfing holiday in Aceh and he said he did not feel like himself when the alleged attack happened.

"I feel like not myself, like almost possessed," he told the ABC.

"It was not a good feeling.

"I wasn't myself. Normally I am a very nice guy."

    Queenslander could face 'flogging'

Mr Risby-Jones faces either two and a half years in prison if the injuries caused are minor or up to five years in prison if the victims' injuries are more serious.

The police chief also said Mr Risby-Jones would be prosecuted for drinking alcohol, which is illegal for Muslims and non-Muslims in Aceh.

He will have a choice to be prosecuted under Sharia law or provincial law in relation to drinking alcohol. Under Sharia law, he would be flogged 40 times if found guilty.

Police said he would be detained for up to 20 days while they investigated the case.

Tourists behaving badly . . . (recent Russians in Bali)

Bali influencer backlash intensifies as island cracks down on problem tourists
    Thu 27 Apr 2023
Luiza Kosykh claims she didn’t know the 700-year-old tree she posed naked in front of was sacred. However, the viral shot captured by the Russian national in Bali was enough to infuriate the local community and resulted in her swift arrest and deportation.

Russian tourist deported from Bali over half-naked photo on sacred peak
    April 5 2023
A Russian tourist has been deported from Bali after posting a photograph of himself half-naked atop a sacred mountain, officials on the holiday island said Wednesday. The 24-year-old Russian national, who calls himself Yuri Chilikin on social media, posed naked from the waist down on Mount Agung, Bali's highest peak, which Hindus on the island believe to be home to their gods.

He’s already admitted drinking “just one shot of vodka”…

I’d seriously be considering provincial law, 40 whacks of the cane is no laughing matter. It’s not just painful, he will require hospitalization afterwards. And you just know a prison hospital in Indonesia is going to be ordinary.

He will have a choice to be prosecuted under Sharia law or provincial law in relation to drinking alcohol. Under Sharia law, he would be flogged 40 times if found guilty.

The Oz news services had comments from him and his fanily about how it was out of character and how they respected Indo culture etc etc - so I guess he'll be happy to accept a bit of sharia culture.

Living in Perth many aussies seem to feel that Bali and indo is a place where they can do anything they wish - and that attitude is reinforced by the shithead mainsteam media services. The drunken idiots and sluts with tattoos and vomit is bad but the junkification by the junk middle classes with their need to turn everything into 5 star bintang establishments is probably worse.

i'd like to say it was confined to Aussies but being young and dumb is universal.

On my first trip to Thailand and on the obligatory Doi Suthep visit decades ago i was walking around the tops of the temple and a group of ( as it turned out Spanish tourists) were pratting about culminating in one of the girls karate kicking a big gong, the Monks were horrified - I spoke enough Spanish to tell them WTF do they think they are doing but you have to wonder what goes through peoples minds - they weren't drunk.

If being drinking in a place full of muslims wasn't dumb enough he had to compound his stupidity in a place where the retards practiced so called Islamic law. It is hard to feel sympathy for someone with such stupidity. At least he found a place where the people have the same IQ.

    negotiations stall

The Australian man accused of a violent, alcohol-fuelled rampage in Indonesia has had his detention extended until next month, as prosecutors decide whether to charge him with assault.
    Key points:

    • Bodhi Risby-Jones injured a fisherman during his drunken rampage in Indonesia's Aceh province
    • Edi Ron says his condition has worsened since he was treated for broken bones and a serious infection in his foot
    • But the fisherman's wife says they are willing to forgive the Australian if they can reach a peaceful resolution

Bodhi Risby-Jones's lawyer and family had hoped to strike a private deal that would see him released without charge, for attacking a fisherman on the island of Simeulue in the religiously conservative province of Aceh.
But the Queenslander and his parents have not reached an agreement on a demand from the victim's family to pay 600 million rupiah ($61,000) in compensation for injury, suffering and lost income.
The fisherman, Edi Ron, is still recovering from broken bones, 50 stitches and a serious infection in his right foot, after Mr Risby-Jones admitted to attacking him during the rampage late last month.
If the Risby-Jones family and his lawyer can reach an agreement with Mr Ron's family, police are prepared to release him from custody and deport him.
But the negotiations are now complicated by Mr Ron's condition, which appears to have worsened since he left hospital in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, two weeks ago.
His infected foot has not responded to treatment, the bones have still not healed properly, and Mr Ron says painful nerve damage makes it impossible even to get out of bed.

Fisherman Edi Ron's condition appears to have worsened since he left hospital.(ABC News)"I can't move my foot yet, I have to use my hand to lift it up," he told the ABC.
"I can't feel anything in this foot."
He and his wife, Eri Saljuna, now fear he may need to have his foot amputated altogether if the infection worsens any further.
"I am very upset because there's a possibility that this incident may cause my husband to be permanently disabled," she said.
"The doctor in Banda Aceh told us that there are two possibilities. If they can't put a metal pin [in his foot], my husband may have to be amputated.
"We don't know yet how many more months or years it will take for him to recover."
Police have the option to keep Risby-Jones in custody 'even longer'

Despite his slow recovery, Mr Ron has refused to stay in hospital any longer, and chose instead to return to Simeulue Island to recuperate at home.
"He wasn't supposed to leave the hospital yet but we wanted to go home because we thought traditional medicines could help," his wife said.
Mr Risby-Jones has been in detention since police arrested him on April 27, accusing him of running drunk and naked from his room at the Moonbeach Resort, and assaulting everyone in his path.

Bodhi Risby-Jones told authorities he was not a frequent drinker and could not explain why he attacked the fisherman.(ABC News)He was initially detained for 20 days while police prepared a file for local prosecutors.
But prosecutors sent the file back to police, asking for more information.
Now police have extended his detention until early June, and say they have the option to keep Mr Risby-Jones in custody even longer if necessary.
"If the 20 days detention period is up and the prosecutors' office still needs time to process the case then we'll extend his detention," one police officer said.
Mr Risby-Jones has publicly apologised for his actions and earlier this month, he was paraded in a prison jumpsuit and balaclava before a media conference where he admitted to the rampage, but said he didn't know why he had attacked the fisherman.
He told police he had "felt possessed" at the time of the rampage, and that his actions were completely out of character.

"Normally I'm a very nice guy," he said after his arrest.
The 23-year-old also admitted to police that he had been drinking vodka at the resort, where he was on a surfing holiday, but insisted that it was only a "tiny amount".
He also denied he was completely naked, because he was still wearing underwear.
Alcohol consumption and possession are completely banned in Aceh, which is the only province in Indonesia ruled by Islamic Sharia law.
If Mr Risby-Jones is charged, it will likely be under the national criminal law, which means he could face up to five years' jail for assault.
Negotiations stall between Australian's family and fisherman

Ms Saljuna says she and her husband are willing to forgive the Australian if they can reach a peaceful resolution.
They're eager to reach an agreement on compensation.
"[Risby-Jones] was the one who caused harm to my husband and now he can't work to provide for our children's future," she said.
"I don't know what's going to happen in the future because my husband can't return to work."

Bodhi Risby-Jones was on a surfing holiday on the island of Simeulue, off the west coast of Sumatra, when he allegedly went on a drunken rampage.(Supplied: Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, Facebook)Her brother, Poni Harjo – a local politician in Simeulue – has defended the family's claim for 600 million rupiah.
They have broken down the claim, saying 100 million rupiah is to cover their daily expenses while he recuperates, 200 million rupiah is for pain and suffering, and 300 million rupiah would help Mr Ron set up a new business, if he can no longer work as he did before.
Though he agreed the compensation could be halved if he recovers fully.
"As for the amount of 300 million rupiah, we are now waiting for the victim to recover," Mr Harjo said.
"If the victim can still work as before, we wouldn't expect that money for him to set up a business."
Mr Harjo stressed that the compensation amount doesn't include medical expenses or the cost of a traditional ceremony, an important custom when a peace settlement is reached.
"If a peaceful resolution is signed with the perpetrator's family, then of course the legal case against him will automatically stop," he told the ABC.
"Because the police report filed by the victim's family would be withdrawn."
Mr Harjo says he has copped considerable criticism in the local community for representing Mr Ron and his family's demand to be recompensed.
"It made it look like I would benefit from the suffering of my brother-in-law. That I stood to gain something from the suffering of another," he said.
"The impact of those amounts now is that it looks like we're extorting the perpetrator's family."
Mr Harjo says Mr Risby-Jones' family have not contacted him personally, but instead sought to negotiate through an employee at the Moonbeach Resort where the Queenslander was staying.
It is understood his parents at Noosa in Queensland have baulked at the amount demanded. But negotiations on a monetary amount are at a stalemate.
"[They] haven't come to visit us or meet me to even ask me how my foot is going, how my condition is," he said.
"[If they approached us], we would accept them with open arms," Ms Saljuna said.
The ABC has spoken to Mr Risby-Jones' mother, but she declined to comment on her son's situation.

    $25k compensation agreement

An Australian man accused of going on a naked, drunken rampage in a conservative Indonesian province will be free to go home next month, after striking a compensation deal with his victim’s family.
Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, 23, was detained in late April near a surf resort in Indonesia's Aceh province, which practices Islamic sharia law, including a ban on alcohol.
Police accused him of drinking vodka on the island and attacking multiple people, including a fisherman who had to be hospitalised with a serious foot injury.
He faced up to 5 years in jail if convicted.
But Mr Risby-Jones and the fisherman came face to face at a reconciliation meeting brokered by local prosecutors today, where they agreed to a compensation payment to avoid the case going to court.
The Australian told the ABC it "feels good" to have a resolution as he was brought to the meeting.

Mr Risby-Jones said "feels good" to have a resolution as he was brought to the meeting with the fisherman.(ABC News)He said it has "taken a long time to find a peace resolution but now that we are there now it is good".
“Staying in an Indonesia cell for a month is hard for the body and for mental [state], but considering everything, I think my health is doing good," he said in an interview while handcuffed and flanked by police.
Mr Risby-Jones's lawyer in Aceh did not disclose the compensation amount the two sides agreed on, but local authorities in Aceh said it was 250 million rupiah ($A25,000), which was handed over in cash today.
A source told the ABC an additional $5,000 was earlier handed over to the family of the fisherman for medical treatment.
"Bodhi's family and friends are very grateful to Mr Edi Ron and his family for reaching a settlement," Andrea and Ben Risby-Jones said in a statement.

Australian man 'happy' the victim's family accepts his apology

The fisherman, Edi Ron, is recovering from broken bones, 50 stitches and a serious infection in his right foot, after Mr Risby-Jones admitted to attacking him during the rampage late last month.
His wife, Eri Saljuna had previously said she and her husband were willing to forgive the Australian if they can reach a peaceful resolution.

On Friday Mr Risby-Jones came face to face with Mr Ron, who had to be carried into the meeting because the foot injury he sustained hasn't improved.
Mr Risby-Jones also apologised personally to Mr Ron's wife, who was presented with brown bags of cash as part of the settlement deal.
"I hope the money can be used to help you guys a lot," he told her through an interpreter.
"I am once again very sorry and I'm very happy that you accepted my apology. Thank you."
Ms Saljuna told the Australian "we are like family" now.
"For the future what [money] we have received from you would be useful and please pray also for my husband to heal as before [and] be able to work normally," she said.
Aside from the compensation, Mr Risby-Jones and the Australian-managed surf resort he was staying at will also have to pay for a cleansing ceremony in the town, which will involve slaughtering a cow.
His family says they will continue to cooperate with Indonesian authorities to bring Mr Risby-Jones home to Australia as soon as possible.
The Australian will remain detained for another fortnight on the island of Simeulue while higher level authorities in Indonesia approve the deal, which is expected to be a formality.
