Thieves caught in the act of capturing monkeys in Lop Buri

Three people, suspected of being members of a wildlife trafficking gang, were found to have used tranquiliser darts to capture over 10 macaque monkeys in Thailand’s Lop Buri province.

An unnamed witness, who claims to have recorded the stealing of the monkeys on his smartphone, said that a saloon car arrived in front of a house in the middle of Mueang district on Monday, where there are many monkeys.

One man and two women alighted from the car and gave food to the animals, which followed them to their car. The man then used tranquiliser darts to subdue the monkeys and grabbed them, one at a time, and threw them into the car.

The witness said he shouted at the group who immediately sped away. Two darts were found at the scene. He reported the incident to Tha Hin police who subsequently checked CCTV in the area.

The police traced license plate of the car to Uthai Thani.

Numerous monkeys have previously been trapped in monasteries by wildlife trafficking gangs and smuggled across the border into Laos for export to China, where their body parts are believed to be an aphrodisiac.

Macaque vermin, I'd support any humane extermination program.

We used to go swimming/snorkeling off a headland from Ao Krathing on the Chanthaburi coast, now pretty much off limits due to the infestaion of the macaque population, they're sprawled over the entry road, climbing over vehicles in the carpark, and the 200m track down to the beach carrying anything in a bag attracts attention, whether food or not.

    Actually, scrap the humane consideration.

They were there first. They're probably complaining about the infestation of humans in their natural habitat and would like to euthanise them instead.

Maybe 'once upon a time'. There were no monkeys on this coast 2010 when we first visited, this is the only place, I understand some were relocated here about 2014-15, likely an idiot in the national parks office thinking they'd attract tourists, instead they've bred, as they do, and become a pest.

Now there are warning signs about carrying bags, cameras, and don't feed them.

Now here's an idea (zoos, restaurants, whatever):

Sri Lanka planning to send 100,000 toque macaque monkeys to China
    Apr 19, 2023
Sri Lanka has found an innovative way to fight its economic situation. The South Asian nation is apparently planning to export 100,000 endangered monkeys to China. Sri Lankan Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, recently announced that the government is considering a proposal to send 100,000 toque macaque monkeys to China to place in 1000 of its zoos.

I limit them by charging 300 baht entry fee, for really good looking ones a multiple re entry may be on the cards. Some may disdain such a hike but I am following local practice about monkey business.

Key thing is never marry a monkey keep them waiting, oh and if limited to a balcony "SWINGERS' are best.

The Sinhalese ones brains will be sold on and the rest in the chef's special, never ever forget in cheap eateries so called chef's special is yesterday's leftovers reheated.

^ They more likely will be used for lab testing. I’ve had a few run-ins with macaques (and baboons) and don’t like them much but I hate to see them captured and mistreated.

Nah, I'm sticking with tiny-dicked chinkies.
