33 lecturers pass off purchased research papers as their own work

Thirty-three lecturers at eight of Thailand’s universities have been found to have submitted research papers bought from some overseas institutes, claiming that they are their own work, Professor Dr. Sirirurg Songsivilai, permanent secretary of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovations, told the media today (Friday).

He said that 34 universities have conducted separate investigations into research papers submitted by more than 100 lecturers, which are suspected of being plagiarised from work commercially produced by some foreign institutes specialised research works for sale.

He said that his office has already received the findings from a number of these universities, eight of which report suspected plagiarism by 33 lecturers.

He thanked the universities for submitting their findings within the timeframe and urged the others to speed up their probes and not protect dishonest lecturers, to demonstrate their transparency.

Using other people’s research work and claiming it as their own is a breach of academic ethics and a disciplinary violation, said Dr. Sirirurg.

Quelle surprise. But one wonders how they caught them, did they purchase already published papers? Was the quality of the research really low? Or did the research methods section reference cities and places in India and China instead of Thailand?

...my editing work for local profs has produced a number of examples of outright plagiarism...one dean of a local business school asked me to re-write one section of his research work to avoid charges of copying...I declined...

All of which explains why UK institutions do not regard Thai qualifications as of sufficient academic rigour to qualify for enrolment in their degree courses and most demand the prospective student pursues a foundation course before commencing study for their UK degree.
The entire society is crooked, from top to bottom.
And of course explains in part why everything fucks up here, eventually.

Its a disgrace - I hope they are fired. They should have their names published in the leading journals of their disciplines. In Oz most thai tertiary quals are looked upon as second-rate and with suspicion - I guess thats why anyone half decent goes overseas for them.

Little wonder the kids think copying everything is acceptable.

    More likely too high.

SA does make a valid point in that Thai society has different values regarding this kind of thing - I'm surprised this was actually followed up.

I've searched for and found existing prior art patent documents and used them for preparing my own patent application.

This is not plagiarism as I am using these prior art documents as a reference to a particular field of technology and to compare the published claims against what I wish to claim.

If a person uses and registers, in their own name, any known prior art document without circumventing the written prior art claims of that document they are idiots, pirates and thieves .

Art patents? Does that mean you are an artist?

    No to both questions Willy.

Prior art is a term used to identify registered novel ideas and based upon the written innovative claims.

When you register a patent application you must site present and registered similar patent claims and to explain how your claims are different.

Just so willy knows, a lot of plagiarism checking simply involves taking phrases of the text under review and banging them into Google.

It's how we find out sabang is posting russian state propaganda when he deliberately fails to provide the link.

To be fair, it's quite obvious either way.
