Over one hundred smuggled wild monkeys confiscated in Thailand

Thailand’s Crime Suppression Division (CSD) yesterday, May 27th, announced a major confiscation of over a hundred wild monkeys while being transferred to a Thailand-Cambodia border area for sales in the Srimahaphot District of Prachinburi province.

Police officers were deployed to patrol the border areas as they were alerted of illegal smuggling of wild animals in the area of Sa Kaeo and Prachinburi Province to neighboring countries, reportedly for sales as food ingredients, hired by a Chinese businessman.

The investigation led to intense surveillance in the border areas. A suspicious pickup truck with a tightly covered trunk was spotted driving along a road in the Srimahaphot district yesterday afternoon, May 27th, 2021. The CSD police then stopped the vehicle and began searching.

A total of 102 wild monkeys was discovered being hidden within the truck. 88 of them were alive but were very weak. Another 14 were already dead. Driver Panupong Joosing, 25, was captured for interrogation.

According to the driver’s statement, he allegedly admitted that he was hired by an unnamed Chinese businessman to smuggle monkeys from the Phichit province to deliver to customers in the Sa Kaeo Province before the monkeys would be transferred across the border to Cambodia.

Panupong claimed that he was hired three times previously and received 3 thousand baht per delivery. He was initially charged for a violation of the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act, 2019, before being taken to the Srimahaphot police station for legal proceedings.

The CSD police are continuing an investigation to identify the businessman who ordered the smuggling operation, although the unnamed Chinese national is believed to be operating from overseas and not in Thailand.

88 monkeys saved from men who eat their brains

Eighty-eight ling-samae monkeys on the way to restaurants in Cambodia were rescued yesterday (May 27, 2021) by Thai policemen who had set up a roadblock to prevent illegal migrants from entering Thailand, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today.

The policemen stopped a pick-up truck and were shocked to find 102 monkeys inside 17 containers. Fourteen of them were found dead.

The pick-up driver told the police that he had been hired by a man in Phichit Province to send the monkeys to Wattana-nakhon District in Sakaew Province, where another man will take the monkeys into Cambodia.

The monkeys will be butchered and eaten by Chinese men, according to the driver. He received 3,000 baht for delivering the monkeys. He had delivered the monkeys three times.

The rescued monkeys were later sent to the Center for Helping Wild Animals Unit 1 in Nakhon Nayok Province.

Thai authorities rescue wild macaques smuggled in pickup truck

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai wildlife authorities said on Saturday they had rescued over 100 long-tailed macaques that were being illegally smuggled in the back of a pickup truck, but more than a dozen did not survive.

The truck was intercepted on Thursday at a checkpoint while on its way to a Thai province bordering Cambodia, transporting 102 macaques in blue mesh bags which were stashed together in various plastic baskets.

The monkeys could be seen struggling and gasping for air when authorities found them, according to video footage provided to Reuters by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

Thai veterinarians have set up a field hospital, equipped with ultrasound scanners and breathing tubes, to treat 80 of the macaques. Four were in critical condition while 18 did not survive, authorities said.

Some of the monkeys were pregnant.

“The monkeys were exhausted and dehydrated for a long time. Some of them had respiratory problems because of overcrowding during the smuggling operation,” the department’s head vet Pattarapol Maneeon said.

The driver of the truck was being detained for wildlife smuggling.

The man told local media that he was hired for 3,000 baht ($96) to drive the truck to the border and that he was not aware there were monkeys in the back of the vehicle.
