Chatuchak Market set to open six days a week by mid-April

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has decided to ease lockdown measures at Chatuchak Market.

Merchants will be allowed to open their shops on weekdays, except Monday, Wanlaya Wattanarat, BMA’s deputy permanent secretary, said.

The market had earlier been ordered shut on weekdays and be open only on weekends to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“To help increase revenue for the merchants, the market will open until 8pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, while on Friday, Saturday and Sunday merchants are allowed to remain open until 10pm,” she said.

“Chatuchak will close every Monday for cleaning.”

The BMA also has ordered the market administrator to expand the walkways within the market by removing obstacles and stalls that encroach on walkways to reduce crowdedness in the areas, as well as install lighting to facilitate people’s night-time shopping.

“We expect the market will be ready to open six days a week by around mid-April,” she added. “After the reopening on weekdays, we are planning to organise promotional activities around the clock tower to attract shoppers, such as cactus or gifts festival.”

The BMA also urged over 10,000 merchants in 31 zones of the market to send one representatives from each zone to participate in meetings with the BMA and market administrator to address any problems they might have and find solutions together.

Wanlaya added that merchants and shoppers at Chatuchak still need to follow Covid-19 preventive measures, including wearing face mask, maintaining social distancing and washing hands regularly.

To open this market with its density of stalls and footfall before the greater majority of the visiting population is vaccinated is yet another act of extreme folly.

First the return of Songkran and now this. Creating vectors for transmission seems to be the order of the day for this government.

Still, I suppose those who make these decisions and their families have all been vaccinated because thy are of course 'vulnerable' people.

They need to close down the entire animals section.

It's just not compatible with food being served nearby in these times.

The whole area wouldn't miss having the number of vendors cut by at least a third.

10,000 merchants is just way OTT.

Princess Sirivannavari, age 34, has received the AstraZeneca vaccine ahead of vulnerable elderly people and frontline key workers

the meeting is one person form each zone, ie 31 plus the market staff. Doable. But those 31 staff each represent how many stall owners? And are then cascading information up and down? That’s the 1000/31 I’m interested in: not doable if their numbers are correct
