Madrid asks for help from Spanish army against coronavirus surge
MADRID (Reuters) - The regional chief of Madrid requested on Monday help from the army to fight the coronavirus surge in and around the Spanish capital where local authorities have ordered a partial lockdown of some poorer areas, prompting protests during the weekend.
“We need help from the army for disinfection ... and to strengthen local police and law enforcement,” Isabel Diaz Ayuso told a news briefing after meeting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in an attempt to reduce contagion in Spain’s worst-hit region.
She also requested makeshift hospitals to be set up in the capital again, about three months after they were decommissioned when Spain emerged from its strict lockdown having reduced the number of infections.
At the height of the first wave of the epidemic in March-April, Spain deployed thousands of troops to help with the anti-coronavirus effort.

Fresh Surge in U.S. Coronavirus Cases Is Feared as Death Toll Nears 200,000
The U.S. reported 39,844 new coronavirus cases Sunday and was closing in on 200,000 deaths, amid fears that the country was heading for a new wave of infections.
Twelve states reported at least 1,000 new confirmed cases on Saturday, led by California with 3,822 and Texas with 3,377.
“I think we have at least one more cycle with this virus heading into the fall and winter,” Scott Gottlieb, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, said on “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “If you look at what’s happening around the country right now, there’s an unmistakable spike in new infections.” He cited about 30 states where the rate of transfer is above one, which indicates “an expanding epidemic.”
So far, 199,511 people in the U.S. have died of the virus and 6.8 million have been infected, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Some 31 million people have been infected world-wide, according to Johns Hopkins data, which put the global death toll at 960,698.

Looking like a second lockdown, maybe harder than the first...
in the U.S. 6.8 million infected,
199,500 dead.
That's about 1 in 7. pretty high, but the infection rate is only KNOWN infections.
And does it include people who've been infected and recovered or just those currently infected?

Twenty photos of life during lockdown have been chosen from over 250 entries to go on a video with UB40.
The winning image of the 2020 Lockdown Photography Competition was by Jack Crook of a deserted dual carriageway.
Judges included Robin Campbell and Earl Falconer from the Birmingham reggae band, city council leader Ian Ward and West Midlands mayor Andy Street.
The photos were taken before any restrictions were eased.

Catching flu at the same time as Covid-19 nearly doubles the risk of death from the virus, Public Health England (PHE) has said.
A new study of hospital patients who contracted both diseases from January to April this year found a 43 per cent mortality rate compared to 23 per in people who caught coronavirus alone.
Although the high death tolls for both cohorts reflects the vulnerable status of those patients, officials are warning that anyone who gets both flu and coronavirus at once could be in "serious trouble".
PHE also highlighted the risk of being hospitalised by influenza and then catching Covid-19 from other patients or staff.
The agency is launching its biggest ever flu vaccination campaign, aiming to make 30 million doses available across the winter. For the first time, all primary school and Year Seven children will be offered the flu nasal spray vaccine in an effort to stop spread between families.

A druggable pocket in the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein that could be used to stop the virus from infecting human cells has been discovered by an international team of scientists led by the University of Bristol. The researchers say their findings, published today in the journal Science, are a potential 'game changer' in defeating the current pandemic and add that small molecule anti-viral drugs developed to target the pocket they discovered could help eliminate COVID-19.

Johnson & Johnson's coronavirus vaccine is fourth to begin Phase 3 trials in the United States
(CNN)Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine candidate begins Phase 3 trials in the United States today. Trials for the single-dose vaccine will include up to 60,000 adult participants at nearly 215 sites in the US and internationally.
Phase 3 trials will begin immediately, with the first participants receiving doses on Wednesday, Johnson & Johnson Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Paul Stoffels said on a call with reporters. The vaccine candidate was developed by Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.
Johnson & Johnson is now the fourth company to begin large-scale clinical trials for a Covid-19 vaccine in the United States, behind Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca.
While the other vaccine candidates require two doses, Johnson & Johnson's candidate will be studied as a single-dose vaccine, which should expedite results, said Stoffels.

Never thought I would be saying that I am glad I had Dengue Fever!
Link to full article below. This is from studies in Brazil:
Places with lower coronavirus infection rates and slower case growth were locations that had suffered intense dengue outbreaks this year or last, Nicolelis found.
“This striking finding raises the intriguing possibility of an immunological cross-reactivity between dengue’s Flavivirus serotypes and SARS-CoV-2,” the study said, referring to dengue virus antibodies and the novel coronavirus.
“If proven correct, this hypothesis could mean that dengue infection or immunization with an efficacious and safe dengue vaccine could produce some level of immunological protection” against the coronavirus, it added.
Nicolelis told Reuters the results are particularly interesting because previous studies have shown that people with dengue antibodies in their blood can test falsely positive for COVID-19 antibodies even if they have never been infected by the coronavirus.
“This indicates that there is an immunological interaction between two viruses that nobody could have expected, because the two viruses are from completely different families,” Nicolelis said, adding that further studies are needed to prove the connection.
