AstraZeneca exec says Sputnik V efficacy data welcome, need data on dose mixing

    By Reuters Staff

LONDON (Reuters) - Data that shows 92% efficacy of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine is welcome, and more studies should be done to show if giving doses of different vaccines can be effective, AstraZeneca’s research chief said on Wednesday.

Clinical trials that combine doses of AstraZeneca’s shot and Sputnik V are underway, using a technique known as heterologous boosting.

“I think any data or any vaccine that shows high levels of efficacy I think is encouraging because we need all of these vaccines to work,” Mene Pangalos told reporters when asked about the Sputnik V results.

“In terms of the heterologous boosting experiment that we’re doing in the clinic, using our vaccine and the Sputnik vaccine, it’s something that we need to be doing more of, because ultimately we want to understand how interchangeable these vaccines are,” he said, adding he hoped for data on immune responses from the trials in the coming months.

SYDNEY: More than 500 tennis players and officials were ordered into isolation in the Australian city of Melbourne on Thursday as authorities reintroduced coronavirus restrictions after a worker at a quarantine hotel tested positive for the virus.

The city reimposed an order for masks indoors and a limit on gatherings of 15 people after the state's run of 28 days with no new local cases came to an end.

Melbourne, Australia's second-biggest city, is preparing to host the Australian Open tennis tournament from Monday but play at six warm-up events was heavily disrupted by the new infection with organisers Tennis Australia calling off all matches for Thursday.

The case of the infected Grand Hyatt worker was announced late on Wednesday and Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters an initial round of tests had found no new cases.

The Australian Open was likely to go ahead though "there were no guarantees", he said. "At this stage, the tennis shouldn't be impacted by this. These things can change. Every Victorian knows these are uncertain times."

The Grand Hyatt was one of three main quarantine hotels used by players and officials arriving in Melbourne for the Grand Slam event.

About 1,200 players, coaching staff and officials arrived in Australia in the middle of last month and went into a mandatory 14-day isolation. Most players were released from quarantine last month.

Australia has ranked among the world's most successful countries in handling the novel coronavirus, largely because of decisive lockdowns and borders sealed to all but a trickle of travellers.

Western Australia state, which is on a five-day lockdown after one positive case was detected on Sunday, has since found no new local cases. The states of New South Wales and Queensland also reported no new cases on Thursday.

    I
n all, Australia has had 22,000 local cases and 909 deaths. But its quarantine hotels, where all international arrivals have to spend two weeks, have proved a weak link with the new infection in Melbourne the latest case to emerge from one.

The cabinet is set to meet on Friday to consider whether the quarantine hotel programme should use facilities in more remote, regional centres given the tendency for the virus to escape from hotels into the community.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that hotel quarantine remained the "most effective" arrangement.Morrison reiterated a free vaccination programme was on tack to begin later this month.

Australia has secured an additional 10 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine taking its total to 150 million, which will also be distributed to neighbouring Pacific Island countries, Morrison said.

Like every other major advancement, I'm sure there is a ton of testing and validation that needs doing first, but could be promising... or could be a game changer.

Innovative Israeli Corona Drug Cured 96% of Patients in Phase One Test

On Thursday night, Kan 11 News announced the development of an innovative drug manufactured at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv that cured over 96% of the patients who received it.

This was the new technology’s first clinical phase testing on humans.

EXO-CD24 is an innovative, targeted drug that was in development for many years as a cure for cancer in the lab of Prof. Nadir Arber at the Soroka Medical Center. It may now turn out to be a life-saving drug for moderate to severe Corona patients to prevent their deterioration to a severe condition.

So far, the innovative drug has been tried with great success on 30 critical patients, in 29 of whom their medical condition improved within two to three days, and most of them were discharged home within a few days. The 30th patient took longer to recover.

The drug is taken once a day for five days.

The continued research into EXO-CD24 depends on a decision of the Helsinki Committee in the Health Ministry to approve continued experiments on humans.

People who fail to properly self-isolate after close contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case may face compulsory state quarantine.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration was discussing the possibility, CCSA assistant spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangson said on Friday.

It would also apply to people exposed to coughing or sneezing by a Covid-19 case, had talked with an infected person for more than five minutes or stayed in a closed place with them for longer than 15 minutes without wearing a face mask, Dr Apisamai said.

These people would be required to go to a state quarantine facility, she said.

The facilities could also be open to exposed people at medium and low risk of infection who preferred quarantine to staying at home with other family members, especially elderly people, and risk passing on the disease, she said.

    Stricter quarantine being considered

DPM confirms Thais will start receiving vaccinations in June at a rate of 5 million doses a month

BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has confirmed that Thai people will begin receiving COVID-19 vaccinations in June at a rate of 5 million doses a month using shots from Siam Bioessence, which was transfered production technology from AstraZeneca and is poised to be a production base for ASEAN.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Chanvirakul, speaking at the "Producing a COVID Vaccine to Turn Around the Thai Economy" seminar, remarked that anti COVID-19 vaccinations will return Thailand to a state of normalcy and explained there is a clear inoculation plan despite concerns the EU is restricting exports and could hinder Thai orders from AstraZeneca. He voiced an assurance that 26 million doses resulting from a technology transfer between AstraZeneca and Siam Bioessence would be available in June, adding Thailand is slated to become a production hub in ASEAN.

The DPM urged confidence in the government’s plan to provide 5 million doses a month at no cost to the public.

The DPM went on to note Thailand’s pandemic situation has been light compared to other countries but said the government was applying full control measures, pointing out the new wave of infection was no one in the country’s fault but was due to outsiders bringing in the virus, requiring strict enforcement of the law.

Its been quite bleak lately in case you haven't noticed but there is a chink of light.

Vaccinated Israeli grandparents play with grandchildren again

While officials still urge caution over Covid, many older people are going out to see their family

‘The feeling is extraordinary’: Yoel Silver pushes his granddaughter on a swing.

It was a sight as common as birds chirping in trees or cars idling in traffic. Nobody would do a double-take when they saw children playing with their grandparents. That was before the pandemic, when it was simply a routine image of daily life and not a potentially fatal activity.

But more and more, in playgrounds across Jerusalem, a grandparent can be seen strolling along while a grandchild rushes ahead to slides and climbing frames.

In this city, most older people are vaccinated against Covid-19 and are slowly emerging from nearly a year of strict isolation. While still not advised by authorities, some are cautiously returning to the thing they missed the most.

“The feeling is extraordinary,” said Yoel Silver, a 67-year-old lawyer, as he pushed his granddaughter on a swing. Twelve days before, Silver had received his second shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which initial data suggests gives a high level of resistance to the disease. For months he had mostly seen his 11 grandchildren on video calls.

On the eve of Super Bowl weekend, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote President Biden to tell him that each of the league's 32 teams "will make its stadium available for mass vaccinations of the general public."

Driving the news: Goodell wrote in the letter, dated Thursday, that this can be done swiftly "because many of our clubs have offered their facilities previously as COVID testing centers as well as election sites over the past several months."

One hopes the blue suede shoes come down like a ton of bricks on these stupid fucking arseholes.

Israeli police are weighing opening a criminal investigation into anti-vaxxers who have been scheduling appointments to inoculate only to cancel them at the last minute, forcing HMOs to throw out unused doses.

A law enforcement official told Channel 12 on Friday that police were in the process of gathering information from Facebook posts and TV interviews and checking to see whether those who called on the public to make fake appointments also did so themselves.

“We are investigating the criminal and legal implications of the matter,” a senior police official told Channel 12. “This is a serious and dangerous phenomenon and the matter is under investigation.”

Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said Thursday that the phenomenon is limited, but those trying to disrupt the vaccination drive were “a dangerous group who are ideologically opposed, like a cult.”

One Israeli hospital chief called the phenomenon “criminal” in an interview with Channel 13.

But while the issue has made waves in the media, healthcare providers appear less concerned. The Meuchedet HMO did not have any information to provide on the matter, and Clalit and Maccabi representatives told the network that they did not notice any out of the ordinary trends.

At Leumit, roughly 400 people didn’t arrive to scheduled first doses, but the provider did not attribute the matter specifically to the phenomenon being probed by police.

There are several dozen anti-vaxxer activists that have led a campaign on social media encouraging others not to inoculate, Channel 12 said.

On Thursday, Channel 13 reported that the Health Ministry has also asked Facebook to take down the posts of anti-vaxxers bragging about their exploits; the social media giant has pledged to keep anti-vaxxers and those spreading fake vaccination information off its platform but is failing to do.

“If everyone who does not plan on getting vaccinated makes an appointment to vaccinate and then doesn’t come, we’ll finish the stock (in the trash) really quickly. Just saying,” read one post on Facebook.

A balloon store owner said he would give discounts to those who are not vaccinated, in response to government proposals of similar benefits that will be available to those who are inoculated.

The mask police will have some bite.

TSA to fine mask violators up to $1,500

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recommended a fine of $250, increasing to up to $1,500, for repeated violations of its recently released federal transportation face mask requirement.

"Based on substantial aggravating or mitigating factors, TSA may seek a sanction amount that falls outside these ranges," the agency wrote in a Friday update.

On Sunday, TSA was authorized to fine passengers who fail to comply with the new mask requirements on public transportation systems.
