Fossil of new 80 million year old carnivorous dinosaur discovered in Thailand

Fossilized bones, unearthed on Phuwiang Mountain in Phuwiang district of Thailand’s northeastern province of Khon Kaen about three decades ago, have recently been identified as belonging to a previously unknown meat-eating dinosaur species.

According to Mr. Sommai Taechaval, director-general of the Mineral Resources Department, the dinosaur, which is from the Cretaceous period about 80 million years ago, was named Phuwiang Venator Yaemniyomi in honor of Mr. Sutham Yaemniyom, a retired official of the department who unearthed the fossilized bones in the Phuwiang national park about 30 years ago.

The fossil was studied by Mr. Adul Samathi, a PhD student at Bonne University, Germany, who said he became interested after having seen the fossilized bones and was convinced that they belonged to a special dinosaur species.

He said that the meat-eating dinosaur was about six metres long and its fossilized remains were found in the red sandstone layer.

Dr. Suravech Sutheethorn, a dinosaur expert at Maha Sarakham University, said the fossilized bones were found in 1993 at the 9B pit in Phuwiang national park, adding that fossils of several dinosaur species have been found in Phuwiang district.

Sixteen dinosaur species were believed to have lived in what is Thailand today. Of these, nine were newly discovered species. They are Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae, Kinnareemimus Khonkaennsis, Siamotyrannus Isanensis, Siamosaurus Suteethorni, Isanosaurus Attavipachi and Psittacosaurus Sattayaraki.

New Dinosaur species Discovered in Thailand

KHON KAEN, 14 July 2019 (NNT) - The Department of Mineral Resources has announced the discovery of a new dinosaur species, the 10th to be found in Thailand, at Phu Wiang National Park in Khon Kaen, set to be nominated as a World Geopark by UNESCO.

This is a model of the dinosaur Phuwiangvenator yaemniyomi, the so called hunter of Phu Wiang mountain. The medium-sized Theropods dinosaur is the latest discovery of a new dinosaur type, and is the largest dinosaur fossil ever found in Thailand. The fossil was found at 9B excavation site at Phu Wiang National Park, Khon Kaen province.

The Department of Mineral Resources Director General, Sommai Techawan said today the dinosaur has a 5-6 meter body length, and belongs in the Megaraptora period. It is expected to share characteristics with dinosaurs found in Japan, such as long front and rear legs indicating fast running, along with big claws, and a narrower skeleton compared to other carnivore dinosaurs.

The fossil found was the 5th ever located in Khon Kaen, and the 10th in Thailand. The department and Khon Kaen province is planning to nominate Phu Wiang National Park for endorsement by UNESCO as a world geopark over the next four years, which would add another world-class tourism and ancient-knowledge attraction to the country.
