BANGKOK, 27 May 2019 (NNT) - Before the production of cannabis extract for medical purposes is implemented, the Ministry of Public Health has provided knowledge on applying its use to both modern and traditional medical practitioners. Recently, the ministry held workshops for practitioners of Thai traditional medicine, and participants who passed the test will be able to obtain licenses to prescribe medical marijuana as Thai traditional medicine.
The workshops on using marijuana in Thai traditional medicine were held in 13 areas nationwide. They were organized by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. The participants included practitioners and entrepreneurs of Thai traditional medicine and local doctors. They had to score at least 60% in the test to obtain licenses to prescribe medical marijuana as Thai traditional medicine. Their names will then be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before the licenses will be granted. Currently, there are 16 cannabis-based medical formulas.
The Director-General of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Dr. Marut Jirasetasiri, said the confiscated marijuana plants will initially be used in the production of cannabis extract for medical purposes. The plants will be inspected to ensure that they are not contaminated. The cannabis extract can be used next month, once the production begins. If it has to wait for medical approval, the cannabis extract should be available in the next four to five months.
The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine will consider 10 more cannabis-based medical formulas, and the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, under the Ministry of Public Health, will hold a meeting to discuss this issue next month. The 16 cannabis-based medical formulas will also be improved. Some the formulas are Sanan Traipop oil, which is used to treat liver cancer, and medicines for treating hemorrhoids and skin diseases.
