Pay Traffic Fines or Your Won’t Be Able Renew Your Vehicle Registration

BANGKOK – Starting from July 1st vehicle owners in Chiang Rai and every where else in Thailand will not be able to renew their vehicle registration licenses if they have any unpaid traffic tickets, including photo radar.

Starting from May 24, the Land Transport Department (LTD) and the Royal Thai Police will test their shared software program to see if it works well.

“We are introducing this measure to prevent motorists from ignoring tickets issued by traffic police,” LTD deputy director-general Chantira Parutpat said.

Statistics show that more than 5.4 million tickets have now been ignored. These tickets are issued to traffic-law offenders. So, if these offenders can just throw away the tickets, it isunlikely they will learn a lesson, Chantira said.

Chantira said police would conduct a series of campaigns next month about the serious consequences of ignoring tickets.

“People will be able to check if they have tickets pending by using an app provided by police,” she said.

She said motorists would have to have paid all fines if they want to renew their vehicle-registration licences, which are renewed every year.

“If they don’t pay fines, we won’t approve the renewal,” she said.

Police deputy spokesman Pol Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen said police and the LTD had already linked their database for implementation of this measure.

So now they can combine having an unregistered vehicle with having no license.

    Fucking quality.

they have yet to reach the point where illegible plates are an offence

Concealed plates is a Bt.500 fine so I would assume a missing plate is also fineable offence.

^That would be illegal in the UK.

Look on the bright side, you could have speed cameras zapping you if you drive over 30mph on every main road.
Receiving a 5000baht fine and 3 points on your licence.
Get 12 points and you lose your licence.
Insurance and MoT cameras, traffic wardens hiding on every street corner.
On a plus side, it is a pretty safe place to drive unless you're 6 times the legal alcohol limit at 4 am doing 80mph in a 30 mph zone.

Joking aside. A friend of mine had his motorcycle number plate fitted at the wrong angle. There was no other way to fit it but they still done him for concealing it.

Interesting, my employer painted their entire carpark (where that pic was taken) with yellow lines...... did not realise that had done that to restrict parking.
