Actually, that's crony capitalism at work. In countries where the most capable people rise to the level of flying passenger airplanes, you have competent pilots, but in a country where glamor jobs like that are reserved for the children of the elite......well need I say more?
Yes. Remember Jakropob's (now virtually banned) speech to the FCCT where he talked about his father as an air force pilot who eventually got the Thai Airways Captian's job - and how the system worked on cronyism and elitism?

Also, my wife and I were on an Air Asia flight one time to Phuket, and she whispered to me that the 'air hostess' bitching at us for bringing our own food on baord was a Thai Soap Star - to which I replied: "glad to see she's qualified..I guess this job adds to her resume - Tiger Beer Girl, Chanel Girl, Soap Star, Air Asia Trolley Dolly"
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

    One-Two-Go crash remembered on Phuket

Marcel Suinobal (left) and Christoph Salchetti (right) with the wreath they placed on the plane wreck today at Phuket International Airport.

MAI KHAO, PHUKET: On the second anniversary of the One-Two-Go air crash at Phuket International Airport [PIA], two friends of people who died in the accident held a private ceremony of remembrance on the island today.

Marcel Suinobal and Christoph Salchetti flew all the way from Germany to pay their respects to their friends Andreas Adelhard and Sabine Schumacher, who were among the 90 people who died in the crash.

The two men held a small ceremony at 2:30pm at Nai Yang Temple, before heading to PIA.

PIA Director Pratuang Sonkham and other airport staff joined the two Germans for a Buddhist ceremony at the plane wreck, which still lies under canvas on the airport grounds.

Afterwards, the two friends laid flowers on the remains of the plane.

“It’s still very difficult to come here. I feel pain in my head and my heart. It’s a very hard time,” Mr Salchetti said.

Mr Pratuang told the Gazette he felt a great deal of sympathy for the victims of the crash and their loved ones.

“I feel very sorry about this, but I’m impressed that people are coming all the way to Phuket for the ceremony,” he said.

When asked why the wreck was still at the airport, he said the crash was still being investigated.

“As soon as that [protracted] process is finished, we will have One-Two-Go come and collect the wreck,” he said.

Good. Then bring me a double scotch to 33-H (and be quick about it..)

As for the "engines on idle" and foreign pilot "freezing up", has the manufacturing country of the aircraft (e.g. FTSB) confirmed this Thai report? Don't they usually send their own investigators?

Mum's anger at Thai plane crash deal
    Thursday, January 14, 2010

A MOURNING mother has hit out at compensation paid to the North Lincolnshire families of victims of a Thai plane crash.

Karen Howell, 48, of Scunthorpe, whose daughter Susan was one of four Scunthorpe holidaymakers to die in the 2007 tragedy, said the out of court settlement was made in the US without fully consulting families in the UK.

The $400-million lawsuit was launched against the Thai-owned One Two Go Airlines and other plaintiffs before judges in New York and Florida.

Details of the payouts are confidential, but Mrs Howell said: "We are not happy with the way the confidential settlements were made without our full agreement."

Mrs Howell confirmed compensation had been paid to three members of her family but declined to discuss the scale of the payments.

She added: "We have been told not to discuss the payments with the families of the other victims especially in the USA in case we start to draw comparisons.

"But what is really hurting us is not knowing what caused the death of Susan, her husband and their friends.

"We have not yet received the report of the official investigation into the causes of the crash and there is no sign yet of the inquest being held in the UK.

"We feel the facts about the crash have been swept under the carpet by the authorities in Thailand."

The settlement effectively ended the pending court case in the US.

The courts would have been told newlyweds Steve, 40, and Susan Saunby, 26, and their best friends, Harry, 43, and Helen Slater, 31, all from Scunthorpe, were among 90 people killed when their plane crashed on September 16, 2007.

Inquests into the deaths of the eight British victims of the crash, which claimed 89 lives, are scheduled to be held in Lincoln.

But they cannot go ahead until full official reports into the crash have been filed with the coroner's office.

Hearing into Thai air crash: Pre-inquest date into town couples' deaths

Helen and Harry Slater, who were killed in 2007's Thai plane crash.

A PRE-inquest hearing is to be held later this month into the deaths of the eight Britons who were killed in a plane crash in Phuket, Thailand, more than three years ago.

Among the 90 victims were two Scunthorpe couples, Steve and Susan Saunby, and Harry and Helen Slater.

Lawyers representing their families are due to meet Stuart Fisher, the coroner for West Lincolnshire, Spilsby and Louth, on November 18 at 10am.

Mr Fisher will hold the pre-inquest hearing at Grantham Magistrates' Court.

During the hearing he will discuss with the lawyers the names and numbers of witnesses to be called and which reports into the crash, on September 16, 2007, will be read.

Then Mr Fisher will set the time and venue for the final hearing. The full inquest is expected to last at least one week.

Mr and Mrs Saunby had travelled to Thailand to get married, with the Slaters as their witnesses at the ceremony in the capital Bangkok, the day prior to the crash.

In strong winds and heavy rain their jet liner veered off during a go-around at Phuket Airport and hit an embankment at the north of runway 27.

The Boeing MD-82, owned by One Two Go Airlines in Thailand, broke up in flames and was completely destroyed.

The Thai aviation authorities have identified flight crew error caused by systematic failures at the airline as the probable cause of the crash.

Lawyers acting on behalf of the Scunthorpe families have already agreed to compensation settlements as part of a $400 million lawsuit in New York against the Thai airline owners.

At the British inquest, Mr Fisher may be asked to decide whether criminal charges should be filed against Udom Tantiprasongchai, the former chief executive and founder of One Two Go.

One Two Go started business in 2003 but last year it was taken over by Orient Thai Airlines.

In April last year One Two Go was banned from flying in European Union countries for safety reasons.

Coroner to Revisit Phuket One-Two-Go Crash Questions
    Alan Morison

A WEEK-LONG hearing is being planned in Britain into the crash of a budget airline holiday flight on Phuket that killed 90 people. The hearing will take the form of an inquest on eight Britons who died on the flight three years ago.

Under British law, an inquest by a coroner is required to formally ascertain the cause or causes of death of British citizens.

A British online media outlet says that among the victims of the One-Two-Go MD-82 crash were Steve and Susan Saunby, who had been married in Bangkok just the previous day, and Harry and Helen Slater, who were witnesses at the wedding ceremony.

The fate of the newly-weds and their friends will be formally declared once Stuart Fisher, the coroner for West Lincolnshire, Spilsby and Louth, completes what is expected to be a week-long hearing.

The inquest will almost certainly reopen issues surrounding the cause of the crash.

Lawyers representing the two families are to meet Mr Fisher in a pre-inquest hearing on November 18 to determine the witnesses who will be called when the inquest goes ahead, thisisscunthorpe.co.uk reports.

A coroner most often makes a verdict of natural death, accidental death, misadventure, suicide, or murder. If the verdict is murder or culpable accident, criminal prosecution may follow, and suspects are able to defend themselves.

Thai authorities have only ever released a summary of the investigation into the causes of the crash, identifying flight crew error and systematic failures at the airline as contributing factors.

''Lawyers acting on behalf of the Scunthorpe families have already agreed to compensation settlements as part of a $400 million lawsuit in New York against the Thai airline owners,'' the online report says.

The early evening crash-landing of flight 269 on September 16, 2007, came in driving rain and strong winds, leaving 40 survivors to be rescued from the broken and burning fuselage.

One-Two-Go flights were suspended by Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation and resumed after changes and additional training in December 2008.

The budget airline's parent company, Orient Thai, superseded the One-Two Go brand just before the third anniversary of the Phuket crash this year.

Bangkok Post | General news | One-Two-Go grounded, pilots' licences cancelled

    PHUKET AIR CRASH INVESTIGATION

One-Two-Go grounded, pilots' licences cancelled AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

The Civil Aviation Department has ordered One-Two-Go airlines to halt operations for 30 days due to substandard operations and revoked or suspended the flying licences of nine of its pilots. Chaisak Angsuwan, director-general of the department, said suspension of the airline's Air Operator Certificate was effective from today.

The department had found shortcomings in the airline's aviation operations, flight schedules and maintenance, along with a lack of quality assurance.

The low-cost airline had violated aviation safety regulations and lacked proper airline management.

The flying licences of seven of the airline's foreign pilots were revoked, six Indonesians and a Venezuelan, and the licences of two Thai pilots suspended.

The department found the pilots on the airline's MD80 series aircraft had submitted documents misstating their level of expertise.

The airline and its pilots were liable to criminal penalties and the department would file charges against them in two weeks, said Mr Chaisak.

The announcement follows the department's investigation into the crash of flight OG269, an MD-82, at Phuket International Airport on Sept 16 last year, killing 89 people and injuring 41. [ CORRECTION; 90 deaths in all. ]

    __

    No indictments materialized.

Would seriously stay off budget Thai airlines.

Inquest over plane crash deaths of landlord and his new wife
    Fri, Nov 19, 2010

TRAGEDY: The charred wreckage of OG 269 in Phuket, Thailand

A CORONER in Lincolnshire is to preside over an inquest into the deaths of eight Britons – including former Grimsby pub landlord Steve Saunby – in a Thai plane crash.

The 41-year-old was credited by customers with "turning around" the Pestle And Mortar in the town's Market Place during the time he ran it.

As reported, the crash happened on September 16, 2007 – only a day after he had married his girlfriend, Susan Howell, 26 in Bangkok, and the couple were believed to have been travelling to Phuket for their honeymoon.

They had been travelling with friends Neil Slater, 43, and his wife Helen, 31, who were witnesses to their marriage.

Lincolnshire Coroner Stuart Fisher is now likely to hear the inquest in full no later than the end of March, and yesterday held a pre-inquest review to deal with management issues.

Steve Saunby, landlord of the Pestle And Mortar, who died in the crash.

The two couples were on the budget One-Two-Go Airlines' flight OG 269 from Bangkok to the resort island of Phuket, which crashed at the destination airport at 3.40pm local time.

Just 40 of the 130 people on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 survived.

The airline is banned from operating in Europe.

During the review, relatives were noted as interested parties and the evidence to be read or given in person was listed.

Mr Fisher said evidence from the post-mortem examinations was to be limited to the conclusions.

This would involve noting, for example, the cause of death as multiple injuries.

Forensic and dental records for identification are also to be presented.

Mr Fisher: "There will also be statements from members of the families setting the scene of why particular individuals were flying on that aircraft.

"It helps me understand why they were in Thailand and where they were going to."

The coroner added that three of the survivors may give evidence.

Mr Fisher said: "Their statements say they were aware of the plane crashing.

"They were in the lucky position to be able to get out the door and on to a wing and away from the aircraft."

Mr Fisher said the crucial witness was Philip Taylor, a senior inspector of air accidents at the Air Accident Investigation Branch, who could explain in simple terms some of the more complex parts of the crash investigation report.

One relative pointed out to the meeting that no British investigator had actually visited the crash scene.

The plane crashed in strong winds and heavy rain after a failed attempt to abort the landing at the last minute.

The fuselage split in two and the aircraft was mostly destroyed in a fire.

Mr Fisher explained to the court that his jurisdiction only covers England and Wales.

"I have no power to order those who live outside to attend the inquest," he said.

"I have written to the chief executive of the airline by fax, asking if he would be prepared to attend or at least send a representative.

"A letter was also send to Thailand via Foreign Office diplomatic bag.

    "We have heard absolutely nothing."

Mr Saunby was landlord of the Pestle And Mortar between 2003 and 2004.

Thai plane crash victim's family fears inquest will not bring justice
    Fri, Mar 11, 2011

    Helen and Harry Slater.

THE inquests into the deaths of four North Lincolnshire holiday-makers who were killed in a Thai plane crash will be held in Lincoln later this month.

The two-day hearing on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22 and 23, conducted by the Lincolnshire coroner Stuart Fisher, comes three-and-a-half years after the plane crashed at Phuket International Airport in strong winds and heavy rain on September 16, 2007.

Scunthorpe licensees Harry Slater, 43, and Steve Saunby, 40, and their wives Helen, 31, and Susan, 26, were among the 90 people killed in the crash.

Susan's mother Karen Howell, 49, said: "Obviously, we welcome the fact the inquests are being held at long last and we will be there in court.

"But we fear the hearing will produce nothing that we don't already know, and will not bring the guilty people involved to justice.

"We have been told the coroner has no power to order the former owners of the Thai airline to attend the inquest so they that could face charges.

"The One Two Go airline has since been sold on, after being banned from operating in Europe.

"So it looks like no one is going to be held accountable in public for the deaths of Suzie and the others.

"We have been told there was a series of causes for the plane crash, including crew fatigue and insufficient co-ordination.

"We have also been told the firemen on duty that day were not properly trained."

Mrs Howell said she and family members of the seven other British victims had been invited to meet a senior inspector from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) in Sutton Coldfield. The AAIB inspector Philip Taylor is expected to give evidence at the Lincoln inquest, as well as three of the survivors.

It is understood that a statement from the families of some of the American victims of the plane crash has also been sent to Mr Fisher.

Out-of-court compensation settlements for the families of the British victims were successfully negotiated in 2009 by lawyers from the London firm Stewart's Law, who will also be present at the inquests. A spokesman for Mr Fisher said: "It is not the coroner's policy to release a witness list before inquests."

The hearing starts at 9am at the Lincoln Cathedral Centre on Tuesday, March 22.

    This thread needs clarification

The articles quoted in this thread are somewhat inaccurate:
    1) The US lawsuit was filed at $400M in the US but that is just something lawyers do for press attention. It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the amount paid to the 90 dead and 30 injured. What actually occurred -- and the families are justifiably upset -- is that the US lawyers who "owned" the case made an agreement with the lawyers for Orient Thai for a dollar amount closer to 1/10th or 1/40th of that amount (somewhere between $10M and $40M) and these lawyers decided how that money would be divided among the victims' families and surviving victims. In summary: very little money for the dead and maybe even less for the severely wounded.
    2) The claim by the insurance company's lead insurer, Global Aerospace, "We are proud of product and stand behind our willingness to pay $50,000 per deceased." Yup, 1 year of US college is what your family gets after you are killed by Orient Thai
    3) A crash report by the Thai Authorities WAS produced after much pressure from family members and the US Government. However, it was never published in Thailand.
    4) The Thai and NTSB crash reports were published here: investigateudom.com/files/ThaiReport.pdf for the Thai version investigateudom.com/files/NTSB/NTSB_mtl.htm for the NTSB version
    5) Report summary: Exhausted pilots who were vastly beyond the legal limits of flight hours AND completely untrained AND working for an airline with incorrect training, regular check-ride fraud AND had no safety program forgot to push the TOGO aka go around button when attempting a go around at Phuket Airport. They hit an embankment. (Wind shear was not a factor.)
    6) For background on the illegal flying by Orient Thai -- not just at the time of the crash - and the attempted cover-up by Orient Thai and Vittuchai (also the lead investigator) -- read investigateudom.com/timeline.php

(Someone with more rights on this forum than I will have to fix those links)

"The One Two Go airline has since been sold on,"

Not true it is still owned by the same well connected family. They simply folded One-Two-Go into Orient Thai.

And then, Orient Thai changed it's call designation to Thai Airlines or something or other very similar to Thai Airways, where is that link I.U.?,

    not trained!

No they weren't. They were fully trained according to Udom. The report calls out glaring failures in training and the western trained pilots at Orient Thai concur.
Not that wind sheer was a factor -- but OT's training for wind sheer was simply incorrect.

Norton please post the link to InvestigateUdom.com/timeline.php. This thread doesn't yet even link the the most outrageous facts about Orient Thai. The info should be made available. Thanks!

That airline still flies to Hong Kong and Seoul as well as several Thai destinations. No thank you.

This is the same carrier that was under investigation for tax evasion concerning the alleged sale of the engines off those old 747's in Phitsanolok.

The word was 'out' on the other three stories about hi-so connections in a big way (well two of them anyway). Didn't make one fecking bit of difference. The Thai hi-so are immune to punishment.

What I mean is that they were trained to a standard where they could legally fly the plane, as they were both fully qualified to do so.
