LOPBURI, 5th September 2018 (NNT) – Over five hours of rain in Lopburi province has resulted in runoff flooding roads and homes in its central district, while Ayuthaya has begun draining canals in its industrial zone in anticipation of up to 20 days of rain this month.
A five hour spell of heavy rain in Lopburi province led to runoff from the mountains into Kok Toom and Nikom Sarng Ton Eng sub-districts of Muang district, flooding Nikom intersection and Kok Toom road. The inundation severely affected traffic and damaged several motorcycles.
In Ang Thong province, homes along the Noi River have been affected by overflows, especially in Bang Chak sub-district of Wisetchaicharn District. The municipal authority of Bang Chak has had to organize patrols both on foot and by boat to provide assistance to residents.
Water problems in Ayuthaya have remained manageable with only low-lying areas at-risk of flooding at this stage. Up to 54 water pumps have been installed in at-risk areas and another 10 mobile pumps on trucks have been readied to respond to emergency situations. Meanwhile, the province’s industrial zone is draining Khlong Hantra, Khlong Chik and Khlong Baan Poh, which have all reached the top of their banks, as more rainfall is expected.
Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has made known that the Office of the National Water Resources and Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, anticipate that rains should ease in September but monsoonal fronts may still occur. The office has been told to re-evaluate water management plans, so as to give consideration to the drought season as a dry spell across Asia is expected.
