    Thai Plane Crashes In Phuket

BANGKOK, Thailand - An airplane crashed and broke in two as it attempted to land at the Phuket airport in southern Thailand on Sunday, Chaisak Angsuwan, director general of the Air Transport Authority of Thailand, told a local television station.

He said it was unclear if passengers were killed or injured. It wasn't immediately known how many passengers were on board.
Angsuwan told TITV that there was heavy rain when flight OG269 of Orient Thai Airways traveling from Bangkok to Phuket attempted to make a landing.
"The visibility was poor as the pilot attempted to land. He decided to make a go-around but the plane lost balance and crashed. It was torn into two parts," he said.

The wife said that on Thai TV that they said that they were unable to rescue 60 people. Then, a few minutes later, she said that maybe it was that they were only able to rescue 60 people. So that is the conflicting story I got. Sorry, but you know how things get lost in translation.

    Phuket plane crash

    Bangkok Post

A passenger jet of One-To-Go Airlines with 128 people aboard crashed while landing at Phuket Airport in southern Thailand late Sunday afternoon and rescue workers said the death toll could be high.

The plane of the budget airline skidded off the runway after landing and crashed into trees, bursting into fire, said Channel 7 TV.

Initial reports estimated that at least 60 passengers died in the fiery accident.

Chaisak Angsuwan, director general of the Air Transport Authority of Thailand said the aircraft broke in two as it attempted to land at Phuket airport in bad weather.

Chaisak told TITV that there was heavy rain when flight OG269 of parent Orient Thai Airways traveling from Bangkok to Phuket attempted to make a landing.

"The visibility was poor as the pilot attempted to land. He decided to make a go-around but the plane lost balance and crashed. It was torn into two parts," he said.

Airport officials and rescue workers are still working to help the victims from the plane which caught fire after it crashlanded and skidded off the runway.

Authorities said there were 123 passengers and five crew members on board when the plane crashed at about 4pm Sunday afternoon.

Weather in Phuket has been bad for several days, with thunderstorms and high wind gusts at times.

Plane breaks in two after crash at Phuket Airport

    Sun, September 16, 2007 : Last updated 18:13 hours
An airliner exploded and broke in two after it slid off the runway and crashed into nearby walls at Phuket airport on Sunday afternoon.

Some reports put the death toll at about 60, but this has yet to be confirmed. The nationalities of those onboard is also unknown, but Phuket is a highly popular destination for overseas tourists.

The airliner services Bangkok-Phuket flights six times a week. The ill-fated airline left Don Muang airport at about 2.30pm.

Information now coming in said the plane, which was being used by local budget travel company, One-to-Go Airline, had 123 passengers and five crew.

The aircraft, flight number OG 269, landed at Phuket airport at about 3.40pm from Bangkok and was taxiing along the runway when it went into a slide. Phuket had earlier been hit by heavy rains.

It crashed into trees and walls surrounding the airport.

Eye-witnesses said the impact of the crash caused the plane to break in two and they heard a series of explosions.

Rescue teams and navy personnel rushed to the scene.

"The plane then fell onto the runway and broke into two. It is expected that there will be deaths."
"We are rescuing people from the aircraft ... we know now there were 123 passengers and five crew," he told the news channel.

"We won't know what really happened until we hear the black box."

    Fatalities after Phuket air crash

    Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:22
A passenger jet carrying 128 passengers and crew has crashed in bad weather at Thailand's resort island of Phuket.

The local governor has warned that 90% of those on the aircraft are believed to be dead.

Foreigners were on board the plane.

The MD-80 plane, operated by Thai budget carrier One-Two-Go, broke into two on landing.

It was flying to Phuket on southern Thailand's Andaman coast from the capital Bangkok.

A civil aviation official said the airplane had asked to land but due to the weather, strong wind and heavy rain maybe the pilot did not see the runway clearly.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown.

Herein lies the cause. The MD-80 &81 are notoriously unstable & at least 4 have flipped completely over upon landing. A Swiss airlines plane went down with an on-board fire some years ago. It is not wise to fly on these deathtraps.

    -----
Correction - it is the MD-11 that kept flipping over. The MD-80/90/95 had other issues. The Swissair 111 flight went down due to faulty insulation which caught fire. After a Chinese plane flipped over some years ago, I refuse to fly on MD series.

Jet Crashes in Thailand; Deaths Reported

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — A One-To-Go Airlines jet crashed and was engulfed in flames as it attempted to land in heavy rain at the Phuket airport in southern Thailand on Sunday, authorities said.

Maj. Gen. Deecha Butnamphet, police chief in Phuket, said on local television station TITV that "we believe that there are many people who are dead. We are taking the dead and injured out from the scene.
"The airplane is completely destroyed and inflamed," he said.

It wasn't immediately known how many people were on board, though TITV said without citing sources that 123 mostly foreign tourists were the passengers, which was traveling from Bangkok to Phuket, a popular resort area for tourists.

TITV reported 60 dead, but Chaisak Angsuwan, director general of the Air Transport Authority of Thailand, could not confirm that.
Angsuwan told The Associated Press by telephone he believes "there are people dead, but the number is still unclear."

Earlier, Angsuwan had told TITV that there was heavy rain when One-To-Go airlines flight OG269 from Bangkok to Phuket attempted to make a landing. One-To-Go, a budget airline, is owned Orient Thai Airways.

"The visibility was poor as the pilot attempted to land. He decided to make a go-around but the plane lost balance and crashed. It was torn into two parts," he said.

I or my wife are often on that flight as we have homes in both Phuket and Bangkok and buy the platinum cards so only fly on one2go now, usually twice a month or so. I've been on that very flight a number of Sundays.

Time to rethink maybe, but it's likely a weather problem.

Most believed dead in Thai plane crash - report
    16 Sep 2007
    Source: Reuters

    (Updates death toll, adds details)

BANGKOK, Sept 16 (Reuters) - A budget Thai airliner carrying 123 passengers and several crew crashed on landing at the resort island of Phuket in driving rain on Sunday, killing as many as 90 percent of people on board, Phuket's deputy governor said.

"The casualties should be higher than 90 percent. I'm at the airport and the plane is still smoking," Vorapot Rajsima told Channel 9 television.

Chaisak Chai-arkad, a senior airport official in Bangkok, told Thai radio that the One-Two-Go flight from Bangkok had broken in two on impact. TV images showed a crumpled fuselage.

"The first part of the plane is dug into the ground. The tail section is stuck on the runway," he told Thai radio.

Amid confusion about the number of killed, Phuket's mayor, Anchalee Vanich Thepabutr, said that she had seen more than 50 bodies taken from the wreckage and moved to the terminal's cargo buildings.

However, Anchalee said 20 survivors had been taken to hospital.

The flight to the Andaman sea paradise isle, which was hit by the Dec. 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, was known to be carrying foreign holiday-makers.

One radio station said seven foreign survivors were among those taken to nearby hospitals.
