BANGKOK, 31st May 2018 (NNT) - The Department of Industrial Works (DIW) has implemented new measures to dispose of electronic waste in a pilot waste disposal factory that uses the latest technology in garbage compacting.
DIW Director-General Mongkol Pruekwatana today led a tour of the new waste disposal process. The plant is the first to introduce the innovative mobile garbage compactor and is currently the most effective electronic waste disposal facility available.
Mongkol revealed that Thailand imports around 53,000 metric tons of electronic waste per year, which is processed in 148 licensed factories. These include factories for waste disposal, separation, and precious metal extraction. Last year, electronic waste was imported from Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Up to 98% of electronic waste consists of mobile phones, circuit boards, and computers. Existing regulations require permits for the disposal, treatment, and import of electronic waste. Additional measures are in place to limit environmental impact and ensure public safety.
Nevertheless, the Cabinet has submitted the Hazardous Substance bill for consideration in the National Legislative Assembly to allow the government to effectively regulate hazardous substances. The Act would ensure that agencies work in the same direction to comply with international agreements, while taking into account environmental and public safety.
