LOPBURI, 7th May 2018 (NNT) – Authorities in Chaibadan district of Lopburi province have begun a project to neuter and spay the macaque population at Wat Khao Sompoch to rein in the currently unruly population.
Veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants have joined forces with Conservation Area 1 of Saraburi and Khao Sompoch Forest Preservation authorities to sterilize crab-eating macaques living around Wat Khao Sompoch. The large population of monkeys has become a nuisance for local residents with some reporting damage to their plants as well as fears of disease.
Captured macaques are being provided with health checks along with sterilization. A new digital system is being utilized, which allows for faster sterilization and greater safety than traditional methods. The increased efficiency has helped authorities exceed an initial target of 200 monkeys to succeed in sterilizing 316 to date. Animals that have been properly neutered in the project are returned to their natural habitat.
