KAMPHAENG PHET, 16 April 2018 (NNT) – An eco-friendly activity called “plogging” has been organized in Thailand's Kamphaeng Phet province as part of the Songkran celebrations.

Kamphaeng Phet Governor, Tatchai Seesuwan, presided over the launch of the plogging activity, which took place from the road along the Ping River to a river island. It was held as one of the Songkran festivities in the province.

Plogging is a combination of the Swedish term “plocka upp”, which translates as “picking up”, and the English word “jogging”. In the activity, participants engage in jogging while picking up litter at the same time. Each jogger is required to carry a garbage bag the entire time while the collected garbage is disposed of in appropriate places.

Able to help participants burn up to 288 calories within 30 minutes, plogging is hailed as good exercise and an effective way to keep the environment clean. The activity originated in Sweden and later became popular in other parts of Europe as well as inthe United States. This event in Kamphaeng Phet was the first of its kind to be held in Thailand.
