BANGKOK, 16 March 2018 (NNT) - The committee for the conservation and development of Rattanakosin Island and “old towns” has held a meeting to discuss the effects of ongoing railway projects and expanding the island precinct.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan today chaired the committee’s first meeting of 2018. Attending the meeting were officials from the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning.

First on the meeting's agenda was the development of new railways in Bangkok. The planned MRT Orange Line will run from Taling Chan to Minburi, passing through the Rattanakosin area. The committee expressed its concerns regarding the placement of subway ventilation outlets and connecting walkways. It also expressed its concern regarding the Red Line from Siriraj to Taling Chan that is currently under construction. According to the committee, the railway could potentially affect fire truck clearance at the intersection with Charan Sanitwong Road.

The meeting also discussed a master plan for the conservation and development of Rattanakosin island, as well as a proposal to expand the designated area to create inner and outer precincts. The outer layer would be demarcated by the Chao Phraya River, the current perimeter canal, and the Padung Krung Kasem Canal.
