BANGKOK, 12 February 2018 (NNT) - Thailand's Department of Disease Control is campaigning to prevent the spread of bird flu during the Chinese New Year period by encouraging both businesses and consumers to take the necessary precautions.
Department Deputy Director-General, Dr Khajonsak Kaewjarat, advised the public to consume poultry and eggs that have been well cooked and avoid eating or coming into contact with birds that appear drowsy, lethargic, have unruly feathers or have died from illness. People should also buy poultry from certified vendors and practice good personal hygiene.
Deputy Director-General of the Livestock Department, Dr Jirasak Pipattanapongsopon, said his department has conducted inspections of meat vendors and collected samples to test for microbes, residual antibiotics and possible growth enhancing agents. Those found in violation of existing regulations will be prosecuted. He also asked the public to only purchase meat that has been ministry certified.
In Thailand, no human case of avian flu has been reported since 2006. However, officials continue to implement preventive measures, as outbreaks of the disease have been reported in neighboring countries.
