A 28-year-old Chinese man was yesterday arrested in Siem Reap province for involvement in extorting money from people through a Voice over Internet Protocol scam.


Lieutenant General Uk Haiseila, investigation chief at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department, identified the suspect as Shen Zehui, 28.


Mr Shen was arrested by authorities at Siem Reap International Airport.


“He was one of 25 suspected Chinese gang members hiding in Cambodia,” Lt Gen Haiseila said.


“He threatened and extorted money from people in China via VoIP telephone scams run from Cambodia.”


“He was arrested while he attempted to leave Cambodia and fly home,” Lt Gen Haiseila added.


Following Mr Shen’s arrest, police inspected his rental property in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmon district, where they seized a laptop as well as other materials related to the VoIP scam.


He said the suspect had been temporarily detained for questioning and would be sent to China today.


Authorities have in the past six months arrested and deported hundreds of Chinese nationals extorting money from their fellow countrymen back home using VoIP scams.
