Canadians held by Cambodia in ‘dirty dancing’ case return to Canada

Eden Kazoleas, 19, and Jessica Drolet, 26, were released and returned to Canada Friday evening with Toronto lawyer Frances Tibollo, who negotiated their release.

Two Canadians who faced charges in Cambodia of producing pornographic photos during a party arrived back in Canada Friday night after a court allowed their release.

Eden Kazoleas and Jessica Drolet were among seven foreigners freed after being arrested last month for allegedly posting photos on social media of themselves engaged in sexually suggestive dancing.
The pair arrived Friday evening at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, where they spoke to reporters.

A tearful and shaken Kazoleas called the entire experience “terrifying.”
“I did not know attending that pool party would be offensive to Cambodian culture,” she said.

“The main reason it was so scary is we didn’t speak the native language, so it was confusing,” said Kazoleas.

The two young women had been making their way home since Feb. 5, after their passports were returned to them by Cambodian authorities.

Kazoleas, 19, of Alberta, and 26-year-old Drolet, who is from Ontario, were jailed for more than a week and kept in a cell with more than 45 other women, said their Toronto lawyer, Michael Tibollo.
“It was a very confined space,” he said. “They barely had space to lie around or make a bed to lie on, so the conditions were not the best.”

The pair returned to Canada with Tibollo’s daughter, Frances, who negotiated their release, he said.
He said the women left Cambodia shortly after their release, flying to Thailand and then the Philippines before returning to Canada.

Unable to go into details because the investigation continues, lawyer Frances Tibillo said that neither had participated, nor encouraged, pornographic behaviour of any kind.

The pictures that have gone viral since the arrests are not from the pool party the women attended, said Tibillo.

They are time stamped from three to five years ago, she said. The women are not in the photos.
“The photos are at night. The pool party they attended was in the day,” said Tibillo.

The women had never been to Cambodia until September 2017.

“I’m saddened by media’s misrepresentation of my actions at this party,” said Drolet. Both women are grateful to be home and looked forward to speaking to their family. After the experience they have become “more like sisters,” said Drolet. Drolet wouldn’t return back to Cambodia after this experience. She here’s a message of caution for all travellers. “Be aware of the cultures of the country you’re going to.”

Yim Srang, a court spokesman in the northwestern Cambodian province of Siem Reap, said the investigation into the case has been completed and the seven people accused were freed Wednesday. He said three other people remained in detention, but he didn’t know their names or nationalities.

The 10 people — they included five from the United Kingdom, and one each from Norway, the Netherlands and New Zealand — were detained when police raided a commercially organized party at a rented villa in Siem Reap town and found people dancing at an event described as a pub crawl.

Police who conducted the raid originally detained almost 90 people, and it was unclear why they singled out 10 to remain in custody and be charged.

Police said those caught in the raid had been “dancing pornographically” and offended Cambodian standards of morality. They face up to a year in jail if convicted.

The complainant in this case owns numerous massage jounts where his staff earn 120us a month and spend most of their time jacking off asian tourists in pursuit of 10us tips. Asians don’t do irony. Shame.

Cambodia deports Westerners charged with 'dirty dancing'

Seven Westerners detained in Cambodia on pornography charges after a pool party have been deported, a court official says. Three others remain in custody despite denying the allegations.

Seven of 10 foreigners arrested in Cambodia last month on charges of posting allegedly pornographic photos on social media have been expelled from the country, a court official said on Monday.

Their lawyer, Ouch Sopheaktra, confirmed that the seven had left Cambodia from Wednesday through Friday last week after being freed on bail.

The ten young Westerners — five from the United Kingdom, two from Canada and one each from Norway, the Netherlands and New Zealand — were arrested at a party two weeks ago in a private villa in the town of Siem Reap. Police accused the group of "singing and dancing pornographically."

A court in Siem Reap, which is near the famous Angkor Wat temple complex, charged the 10 with producing pornographic materials, with a prosecutor alleging that the organizers of the party had posted obscene images online to advertise the event.

All 10 accused have denied the charges, saying only that they were wearing clothing that could be considered suggestive. No charges have been formally dropped so far.

The seven who have left the country received bail because the court accepted that they had not organized the party, but Ouch Sopheaktra said he had no intentions of applying for bail for the three remaining foreigners: a Briton, a Dutch and a Norwegian national.

If offenders are convicted of posting pornographic photos, they can be punished with up to a year in jail in the largely Buddhist country. Authorities have yet to announce a date for the trial.

Although the temples of Angkor Wat are considered sacred, the nearby town of Siem Reap is known for its lively nightlife, bars and restaurants.

In 2016, a number of foreigners were arrested in Angkor Wat for taking suggestive photos.

Cambodia drops pornography charges against nine of 10 foreigners

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian court has dropped charges against all but one of a group of 10 foreigners who were charged last month with producing pornography at a party in the tourist town of Siem Reap, the court said on Monday.

The 10 were detained on Jan. 25, along with 77 other foreigners, in a raid on an event called the “Pub Crawl or Let’s Get Wet” in Siem Reap province, home to the ancient Angkor Wat ruins.

The Siem Reap Provincial Court, which has deported the nine, had dropped all charges, Yin Srang, the court’s spokesman, said.

“The charges against the nine people have been dropped,” Yin Srang told Reuters.

Yin Srang said the remaining suspect is a British national.

Briton guilty of 'unintentionally creating pornography' with pool party photos offensive to Cambodian culture

Five British men arrested for 'pornographic dancing' in Cambodia-telemmglpict000157500375_trans_nvbqzqnjv4bqhvwvnnyzbygpg19tper5ea4pfl4heisxhblrawnas6q-jpg

British expat has been convicted of using "pornographic" photographs to promote a pool party in Cambodia.
Daniel Jones, from Essex, was given a one-year suspended prison sentence on Tuesday over what a judge described as an "unintentional" act that offended local culture.

The 31-year-old was among 10 foreigners arrested in January after police raided a private villa in Siem Reap, a tourist town near the famed Angkor Wat temple ruins.

During his trial in siem Reap, Mr Jones insisted there was no sex or nudity at the party, which he promoted on Facebook with the tagline "Let's Get Wet" and apologised for causing offence.

But prosecutors successfully argued that any images which encourage sexual activity are illegal and against
    Cambodian culture.

The court found him in breach of decency laws and handed him the maximum one-year sentence.

But since he had already served a month and 22 days on remand "the rest will be suspended", the judgement said, according to court spokesman Yin Srang.

Judge Um Chan Thol called Mr Jones' act of producing pornography "unintentional".

"The accused said he unintentionally produced pornography that affects Khmer culture," the judge said while reading his verdict, referring to Cambodia.

Mr Jones is expected to be released on Wednesday. "There was no evidence against my client," said his lawyer, Ouch Sopheaktra. "As a lawyer, I am not happy with this decision."

Cambodia is popular with foreign backpackers and many are drawn to the wild nightlife. But the Buddhist country is often strict when protecting local traditions or heritage, especially around the Angkor complex.

During the trial, a police witness said officers raided the pool party to prevent sexual acts, adding that they had found condoms at the villa.

Mr Jones told the court he had organised four parties for tourists before his arrest, charging attendees for transport and offering a free drink and T-shirt.

Authorities have already banned skimpy clothing inside the Angkor Wat complex and deported foreigners for taking saucy photos among the temple ruins, which are considered sacred.

But those violations occurred inside the ancient city and not in the adjoining town of Siem Reap, a party destination crammed with bars catering to foreigners.

The court had dropped charges against the other nine foreigners and deported them.
