BANGKOK, 6 October 2017 (NNT) – The Tourist Police arrested five Korean nationals on charges of running a gambling website in Thailand for Korean clients.
Acting Tourist Police commander Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakpan announced the arrest of the five Koreans along with the confiscation of computers, cellphones, and other devices as well as a total of 150,000 won in cash allegedly used with the online gambling.
He said the police had been given a tip-off from the Embassy of South Korea in Thailand which led to the capture with an arrest warrant from the South Bangkok Criminal Court at a condominium in Sathupradit neighborhood of Bangkok. Many computers were found at the condo unit to accommodate the online gambling.
All the suspects said they had been hired by a Korean businessman to administer the online gambling site for some 700 Korean clients, generating 600-700 million baht circulation each year.
The police will file a money-laundering charge against the suspects, and put them on the country's no-entry blacklist. Further investigation will be carried out to capture others allegedly involved in the illegal business.
