Starting today (Sept 4), the Land Transport Department will issue new driving licenses which are smart cards encoded with QR code and safe against counterfeiting, said Sanit Promwong, the department chief.
But he said however that existing driving licenses are legally valid and need not have to be changed to the new smart driving licenses unless the licenses have expired.
Life-long driving licenses can still be used and they need not have to be replaced unless the holders of the driving licenses want them to be upgraded, said Mr Sanit.
He added that the new smart driving licenses can be used in the other Asean countries without any need for the drivers to apply for an international driving license.
A special feature of the new driving licenses is the QR Code which collects electronic information regarding the holders of the driving licenses on top of the normal information which appears on the licenses.
