BANGKOK, 1 September 2017 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has warned residents of 10 districts outside the embankment zones to beware of an approaching storm surge, which could trigger flooding next week.
According to Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang, the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has issued a report saying the rising water levels of the Chao Phraya River are manageable, provided that there is no more rainfall in the Central Plains during this period.
However, a storm surge forecast to occur between September 4th and 8th will raise the Chao Phraya River in the nearby provinces of Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani by 10-15 centimeters. It is therefore advisable for Bangkokians living beyond the flood levees to take precautions.
A recent survey shows that there are 496 households in the flood-prone districts of Bang Sue, Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Samphanthawong, Bang Kholaem, Yannawa, Khlong Toei, Bangkok Noi, Khlong San and Rat Burana. Those living in these areas are urged to stay on the alert and prepare to move their belongings to higher ground if there are signs of flooding.
