CHIANG MAI, 17 August 2017 (NNT) – Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office will begin to issue driver's licenses on Smart Card which can prevent counterfeiting early next month.
Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Official Chanchai Keelapang said the office will issue the driver's licenses in the form of Smart Card from 4 September 2017.
The new driver's license will implement modern technology such as a magnetic stripe and QR code, and support the use of application to read the driver's information for the purposes of road safety management.
The Department of Land Transport will no longer issue the traditional paper licenses from 15 August 2017. The Smart Card will not incur any costs in addition to the current fee, he said.
Traditional paper licenses issued before 15 August 2017 will remain valid until their expiry date. Smart Cards can replace damaged, lost and expired licenses.
