Officials of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation on Monday seized zipline equipments from three zipline thrill ride operators in Krathu district of Phuket after finding out that their operations have encroached on forest reserve.
The fourth operator was found to have encroached on Sor Por Kor or Land Reform land.
The raid of the four zipline theme parks in Kamala forest reserve in Tambon Patong of Krathu district and in Nark Kerd forest reserve was led by the department director-general Mr Cholathit Suraswadi and witnessed by a group of local reporters.
The raiding party first conducted a field inspection if Nark Kerd forest reserve which is close to the Freedom beach. It was earlier discovered that land certificates were issued to encroachers allegedly with the connivance of some department officials. An investigation of the case is still under way.
The second spot raided was the zipline theme park operated by Zipline Max Company of Mr Susarun Tohparn which was found to encroach on the Kamala forest reserve. Only five rai of the 36 rai claimed by the company were found to have Sor Kor 1 land occupation right with the rest being illegally occupied.
Officials said that the zipline operator, Mr Susarun, used to operate an illegal zipline thrill ride in Chiang Mai before and the operation was closed down by officials.
During the raid, Mr Susarun approached the officials, claiming that he rented the land from a man in Bangkok who claimed to be the landowner at 200,000 baht a month. He claimed that he opened the zipline theme park only six months ago and admitted that he was yet to receive a permission from local officials.
Mr Chivaparb Chivatham, chief of the Payakprai task force unit, said that the two other zipline operators, Paton Zipline and Phuket Paradise, were found to have encroached on forest reserves in Kamala forest reserve.
He disclosed that zipline operations are scattered in Chiang Mai, Phuket and Rayong. There were 12 zipline theme parks in Chiang Mai with six being charged for encroachment and two dismantled while in Phuket, there are seven with three being found to have encroached on forest reserve and there is one in Rayong.
Mr Somchai Ninprai, a passenger van operator catering to tourists, told Thai PBS that he would receive 150 baht per head from the zipline operator if one of his passengers joined the thrill ride. He admitted that he could get 2-3 customers on average each month.
