A team of veterinarians and officials from the Marine Resources and Andaman Coast Research and Development Centre was sent to the beach in front of a hotel in Thalang district of Phuket on Sunday to examine the carcass of a Bryde’s whale.
The Bryde’s whale, with its head and tail missing, was thought to be a male, aged about 15, ten metres long and weighed about four tonnes. It was assumed to have died 3-4 weeks ago.
The officials took specimens of the carcass and DNA samples for laboratorial tests to determine the cause of its death. From the initial examination, it was suspected that the whale died from natural cause due to the presence of a huge amount of gas in its stomach.
Bryde’s whale was not usually found in this part of the Andaman Sea. The mammal lives in the deep sea.
