PM assures tower project is funded by private sector

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha yesterday assured that the Bangkok Observation Tower project would be funded by the private sector and no government budget would be allocated to fund it’s construction

Gen Prayut’s assurance came as academics and civic groups demanded clarification why the tower project is to go ahead without open bidding while casting doubt that certain private enterprises may benefit.

The prime minister said the 4.6 billion baht tower project would be developed with funds from the private sector without any use of the government budget.

However he said a committee would be set up to manage the project.

Gen Prayut recalled that the project was not a new project but emerged a long time ago.

The government has foreseen the benefit of the project as it could be a landmark of Bangkok and the general public can enjoy the scenic view of the capital.

He went on explaining that inside the tower would be a museum exhibiting the Thai history and the royal family.

He assured no comercial activities would be inside which would benefit any particular group.
