Thats a different thing for detecting things or the bottom or anywhere underwater they should have a very sophisticated form of side scan sonar for that.

Radar is what they need for above water and they will have several kinds of that which would include proximity alarms, would seem that in this case they either didnt know how to use it or didnt use it.

They could buy something like every small yacht has and place a man to the monitor. This surely does not cost so much, can save a lot of money over 50 years...

How many people pay attention to burglar alarms and car alarms? The key word is "attention"... "Officer Of The Watch" means you have to be watching something... paying attention - bring on automation...

Such a cosy solution. Probably better if shore based so they can utilise the cloud computing more easily.

Remember the days when sailors were sailors. 8 hour watches at the mast head, not including climbing up and down time. Roasted in the days, frozen at nights but all for the same companies profits.

    We knew our places then.

Navy to Transport USS Fitzgerald by Heavy Lift Ship

"On Tuesday, the U.S. Navy said that it has decided to transport the damaged destroyer USS Fitzgerald back to the United States aboard a heavy lift ship. A spokesman for Seventh Fleet told Reuters that the move could happen as soon as September; the shipyard for the repairs has not yet been named publicly.

The Fitzgerald collided with the container ship ACX Crystal on June 17 off Yokohama, leading to a massive hull breach and the deaths of seven sailors. She suffered a hole measuring 12 by 17 feet below the waterline, in addition to damage to her superstructure, her comms equipment and her radar. The total cost of repairs has not yet been released, but it is likely to exceed the $250 million that the Navy paid to repair the destroyer USS Cole after she was struck by a suicide bomber in 2000.

Multiple investigations are ongoing, but Navy officials have quietly indicated that the Fitzgerald's watch probably lost situational awareness. "They did nothing until the last second," one official said. "A slew of things went wrong." Another Navy official said the crash "will wind up being our fault." Officially, the Navy has emphasized that the investigations are not yet complete, and that it is "premature to speculate on causation or any other issues."

The ACX Crystal's master, Capt. Ronald Advincula, asserted that his vessel had attempted to signal the Fitzgerald prior to the collision by means of flashing light. He claimed that Fitzgerald was on a crossing course and did not take evasive action".

USS Fitzgerald: US Navy to discipline dozen sailors

The US Navy has announced that about a dozen sailors are to be disciplined after seven crew on the USS Fitzgerald were killed in a collision.

The destroyer collided with a Philippines container ship in Japanese waters in June.

The deputy chief of naval operations, Admiral Bill Moran, said the commanding officer and two other senior crew would no longer serve aboard the ship.

He said the Navy had lost trust and confidence in their ability to lead.

The Filipino-flagged ACX Crystal collided with the USS Fitzgerald in the early hours of 17 June in Tokyo Bay, causing a large gash below the water line of the destroyer and flooding lower decks.

"The collision was avoidable," the US 7th Fleet said in a statement, adding that "both ships demonstrated poor seamanship".

The dead sailors, aged 19 to 37, were later found in their bunks, after divers gained access to damaged areas of the ship.

The commanding officer was trapped in his cabin by the force of the collision and five sailors had to use a sledgehammer to break down the door.

"Even after the door was open, there was a large amount of debris and furniture against the door, preventing anyone from entering or exiting easily," a report into the incident said.

The ACX Crystal sustained lighter damage to its port bow.

There were no injuries among the 20 Filipino crew members on board the container ship.

Investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

According to maritime rules, vessels are supposed to give way to ships on their starboard side which is where the destroyer sustained damage, sparking questions over whether the US ship could have been at fault.

7th Fleet Announces USS Fitzgerald Accountability Determinations
    8/17/2017 By U.S. 7th Fleet Public Affairs

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- The commanding officer, executive officer and command master chief of the guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) were relieved of their duties by Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, Commander, 7th Fleet Aug, 18.

Additionally, a number of officer and enlisted watch standers were held accountable.

The determinations were made following a thorough review of the facts and circumstances leading up to the June 17 collision between Fitzgerald and the merchant vessel ACX Crystal.

The collision was avoidable and both ships demonstrated poor seamanship. Within Fitzgerald, flawed watch stander teamwork and inadequate leadership contributed to the collision that claimed the lives of seven Fitzgerald Sailors, injured three more and damaged both ships.

With absolute accountability for the safe navigation of Fitzgerald, Cmdr. Bryce Benson was relieved due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead. He had previously been temporarily relieved of his duties due to medical reasons from injuries sustained during the collision. Benson is being reassigned to Naval District Washington at the Washington Navy Yard, where he will have access to medical facilities in the area.

Inadequate leadership by the executive officer, Cmdr. Sean Babbitt, and command master chief, Master Chief Petty Officer Brice Baldwin, contributed to the lack of watch stander preparedness and readiness that was evident in the events leading up to the collision.

Several junior officers were relieved of their duties due to poor seamanship and flawed teamwork as bridge and combat information center watch standers. Additional administrative actions were taken against members of both watch teams.

Cmdr. Garret Miller will assume command from Fitzgerald's acting commanding officer, Cmdr. John "Jack" Fay sometime mid-to-late-August.

It was also evident from this review that the entire Fitzgerald crew demonstrated real toughness that night. Following the collision these Sailors responded with urgency, determination and creativity to save their ship. Their rigorous damage control efforts and dauntless fighting in the immediate wake of the accident prevented further loss of life.

And when there is a dog watch, it was called "dogging". Don't know how the modern definition came about....unless those 2 hours off were spent watching the cabin boy get reamed?

    Just FYI.

I've worked with RN, and never met an honourable one amongst them; all the ones I've met have been incompetent, cliquey, thick, decietful, and profoundly obnoxious.

I've never encountered American ones, but I wouldn't be anticipating any signs of superiority.

Sorry, They do, they are called windows!

Of course they also have doors, which strangely can be opened so one can go outside!

Add to that they also have binoculars, that can be used for seeing things further away.

Of course it maybe that they have lots of hi-tech stuff for seeing things they want to shoot at but nothing to see things creeping up behind them?
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

Time to fire some Flag Officers.

10 missing, 5 injured after USS John S. McCain collides with tanker in Pacific | Fox News

Ten sailors are missing and five injured after the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a tanker east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca, the U.S. Navy said late Sunday.
The five injured sailors suffered “minor” injuries, a U.S. Navy official told Fox News.

Search and rescue efforts were launched in coordination with local authorities, the Navy said. Initial reports indicated the warship sustained damage to its port side aft, the left rear of the ship.

President Trump, returning to the White House from his "working vacation," responded to word of the collision by saying, "that's too bad."

The warship is named after John S. McCain, Sr., and John S. McCain, Jr., both Admirals in the U.S. Navy, and the grandfather and father, respectively, of the Arizona senator.

The ship is based at the fleet's homeport of Yokosuka, Japan. It was commissioned in 1994 and has a crew of 23 officers, 24 chief petty officers and 291 enlisted sailors, according to the Navy's website.

The Alnic MC, the merchant vessel USS John S. McCain collided with, is a 600-foot oil and chemical tanker.

This crash came days after the top three leaders aboard the USS Fitzgerald were relieved of command. That warship was damaged badly in a collision off the coast of Japan that killed seven sailors in June. One of its compartments flooded in about 90 seconds.

The USS John S. McCain sailed by contested man-made islands in the South China Sea earlier this month, drawing China's "strong dissatisfaction."

Sen. McCain tweeted Sunday night he and his wife, Cindy, were keeping the sailors in their prayers. He'd recently visited the warship in Vietnam.

This marked the fourth mishap for U.S. Navy ships in the Pacific since February.

Aside from the USS McCain and USS Fitgerald incidents, the Navy crusier USS Antietam ran aground dumping over 1,000 gallons of oil in Tokyo Bay in Februray. In May, another cruiser, USS Lake Champlain, hit a South Korean fishing vessel.

An active-duty Navy officer expressed concern to Fox News over the training of young Navy officers aboard ships.

“It’s not the same level of training you used to get,” the officer said.

Fox News' Kristin Brown, Lucas Tomlinson and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
