Sleeping Driver Bangkok-bound commuter van crash leaves a half-dozen dead, 11 injured

Bangkok-bound commuter van crash leaves a half-dozen dead, 11 injured

In the early hours of Tuesday June 13th, a pickup truck collided with a commuter van and left six people dead on Chanthaburi’s Highway 317, heading towards Bangkok.

Three passengers along with the driver from the van were pronounced dead shortly after the crash, as well as the driver and another passenger from the pickup truck.

Police were informed by eyewitnesses that, while the pickup truck was driving in one lane, the van came over the traffic divider from the opposing lane, causing the vehicles to crash.

Thai PBS reported that the van had been rented by migrant workers on their way to Chanthaburi to have their visas extended.

It is still unknown as to what caused the mini van to lose control and cross into the oncoming lanes, although police suspect that the driver may have fallen asleep.

Both vehicles were unrecognisable after the crash, but the van will be taken away and checked to see if it was a mechanical failure that caused the accident.

In total, 11 people were injured and admitted to the hospital. They are all said to be in a stable position and hospital staff are hopeful that they will all make a full recovery in the near future.

Thai vans and pick ups crumple up like old ford cortinas from the 1970's.

    Quite frightening.

Driving tired is just as bad as driving drunk.

Driver, Regulator to Pay 26M to Crash Victim’s Families

CHANTHABURI — A state-owned transport regulator and the heir of a van driver were ordered to pay millions of baht in compensation to the families of a traffic accident that killed dozens last year.

Chanthaburi Court ruled Thursday that The Transport Co., Ltd. company and a son of deceased van driver Sumon Eiamsombat had to pay 26 million baht in compensation to the families of the 25 victims killed during the New Year holiday crash in 2017.

A Bangkok-bound van slipped across a road divider and slammed head-on into a pickup truck on Jan. 2, 2017 in Chonburi’s Ban Bueng’s district. Both vehicles burst into flames.

But these two stories are totally different. 25 dead in the report on the decision, but 6 dead in the original article. Different time frame as well. Huh?

    Yes, and what's more is...

The numbers alone say these may be different stories, then there's the fact that the victims were Lao or Cambodian in the first story. A multi million baht settlement to the victims from a Thai, by a Thai court????
    Seems like two different accidents.

Two different stories. As AO said, at different times - one happened on 13th June 2017, the other was at New Year - 2nd January 2017.

The heir of the van driver is financially responsible for his fathers actions? Unless the father (a van driver?) had a large estate, and then why drive a commuter van, I can't connect the dots on this one.

In Thailand, is/are the offspring responsible for the misdeeds of their parents?

I'm guessing as in the West, the perpetrator's estate is liable, thus his heirs are liable to the extent that the estate has funds. I doubt the heir's assets are at risk here, only what the estate of the father left them.

RIP.... Hate unnecessary deaths, but life happens.... Hope they made it safely to the other side, if ever there was one. Thai travel is definitely v v dangerous.
