Thread: Artificial mangrove forest to prevent coastal erosion

Thai researchers have now succeeded in creating a substitute for mangroves to slow down coastal erosion and restore marine life, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT).

NNT reported that a Thai researcher, Thanadon Sattabongkot, has taken eight years to accomplish the invention.

Thanadon said that it took his team eight years to develop the replacement for natural mangroves with a demonstrated ability to speed up the accumulation of coastal soil to foster the growth of mangrove forests.

The project began in 2007.

Made from eco-friendly materials such as wood composites and natural rubber wood, the mangroves substitute can yield tangible results within four months of installation, and can last for up to 10 years.

The means of substituting for mangroves is now one of 56 innovations registered with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).

Geezer... nothing beats the real thing. Plus, real mangrove is good for mother earth.

The only real (short term) benefit is the money made by the manufacturer of the gizmos.
Long term, the gizmos will rot and be overcome by mangroves.

That is the idea and it is a good idea.

Give the mangroves a sheltered environment where they can grow and increase.

Few years ago I was down on that Naval Base in Sattahip and they had been planting
natural mangroves. Good effort I thought.

Cheaper and easier, too.
