Lamborghini sliced in half but driver unhurt in crash on banana tree

The driver of a Lamborghini sports car was unscathed and two drunk lady passengers inside were slightly injured when the car lost control, grazing a motorcycle and crashing into a banana tree.
The banana tree was broken apart after being struck by the speeding Lamborghini sports car.

But the sports car was turned to wreck when the impact severed it nearly in half and forced it’s two left wheels to come off.

The incident happened ‪at 03.00 am Monday‬ on the Praditmonootham road.

Chokechai police said the driver of the sports car and two friends are all in their late 20s, while the slightly injured man and woman on the motorcycle grazed by the sports car are in their late teens.

According to police, the driver of the sports car was identified as Mr Satiravat Kampiranon who was not breathalised at the scene.

He was unhurt while his two friends suffered bruises in their long legs and arms.

The car was borrowed from his friend in real estate business, police said.

Satiravat said after having a dinner at a restaurant on the same road with friends, he borrowed the car from a friend to drive junior friends home on Nawamin road.

As he drove on the steep portion on the Klong Kliang bridge, the car hopped and became airborne.

The car lost control, grazing a couple on a Honda Wave motorcycles, hitting the sidewalk and ramming into a banana tree on the pavement.

The car was then nearly broken in half and two left wheels splitting off and rolling over 500 metres away.

He and his friends were safe with only minor bruises, he said.

Rescue workers however rushed the couple and two in the sports car to Phyathai Nawamin hospital for check.

Police said the driver was tested with no alcohol drinking but he was booked for reckless driving for causing injuries to others and damages to state property.

They are coordinating with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to assess the value of the banana tree after it was broken into splinter parts by the crash.

^Exactly. Of course, this couldn't possibly be any fault of the driver in one of the best handling cars ever built. Damn that very steep bridge .

Obviously, he was driving a Lambo. Wonder which brand of car is the cut-off for normal police procedure?

I trust they gave him a speeding fine as the rear wing is fully deployed?

Hmm. the tree was splintered so maybe it was a Banyan tree? As banana is a plant not a tree.

Well, the fact that he walked away from something that split the car in two would suggest that appearances may be deceptive. Maybe one of our car guys can chip in, but as I understand it much of crash technology is designed around ensuring the car takes the punishment - not the driver and passengers.

Why did the police not breathalize him at the scene?

    I didn't know Lambos could "hop". ;-)

Man and woman on the motorcycle - grazed
The Honda motorcycle - presumed damaged
    Banana tree - in splinters
Lamborghini Murcielago sports car - a write off
    Two friends - bruised.

7 - The Banana plant is a grass, not a tree, and it is very soft. Should not be able to split a Lambo into two.

Lambo's are designed to split in half.

But not in the way this one has. This looks like it's split in half horizontally.

They're designed to split like this in high impact crashes.

Something this Somchai could attest to as he hung out in the field with the prai.

Sounds like there was grounds to breathalise him at the scene; and he was tested later. I wonder how much later?

How long does alcohol stay in your blood? - Health questions - NHS Choices
It takes about 1 hour per unit to be broken down

    Each unit adds about 20mg

Thailand’s legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 grams per liter of blood, and 0.2 grams for drivers who have possessed their license for less than five years.

So a pint (or maybe a pint and a half) and you are over...

I wonder how long after the crash he was tested?

I would say that even stone cold sober, a 20 something Thai would never be able to comprehend the car or it's capabilities, much less respect them.

    Is it my imagination or is there a recurring event here, as in;

Wealthy individual in an absurdly expensive car crashes - time passes
Emergency services arrive - time passes.
Emergency services take him to hospital regardless of how injured he is or is not - time passes.
He is carefully and methodically checked and treated by the best medical teams the hospital and his/her money can buy - time passes.
Hospital staff make statements as to the patients welfare - time passes.
Lawyers arrive to clarify things on the patients behalf - time passes.

    The patient is breathalyzed.

    Patient is cleared.

All is right with the world.

    Time passes.

Looks like the heaviest part of the car, it's rear end containing the engine splits from the cabin upon impact. Stops the engine rear shunting passengers I presume.
