BANGKOK, 23 January 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has prepared to impose measures to regulate the use of drugs in pig farms across the country in an effort to prevent resistance.
Minister of Public Health M.D. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said most pig farms across the country mix dangerous medications in feed for their animals to prevent and cure some diseases. He cited the studies which found that the colistin antibiotics is the cause of new resistance. He added that the ministry will consider if the drug should be classified as a special controlled drug since now it is easily available at drugstores or shops selling agricultural supplies.
M.D. Piyasakol said the ministry will work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to develop measures to control the use of drugs at animal farms. Farmers will also be educated on the matter so that they will be more careful when they use drugs with animals, he said.
