Canadian drowns, another tourist hurt on Koh Phangan

SURAT THANI - A Canadian man drowned and another foreign woman sustained injuries after ignoring a ban on swimming in high waves during the New Year countdown on Koh Phangnan in this tourist province.

The two tourists were retrieved from the sea at Hat Rin beach in Koh Phangan district, but one of them died in the early hours of Sunday, said police.

The dead tourist was a 26-year-old Canadian, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives. The injured victim was a foreign woman whose nationality was not yet known. She was sent to Koh Phangan Hospital.

The drowning was reported during the New Year countdown event, joined by over 20,000 Thai and foreign visitors. Over 100 police and bomb disposal officers were deployed to beef up security at the venue.

During the celebrations, there were high waves. Authorities have banned swimming during this period due to strong wind waves. However, some groups of foreigners ignored the warning sign.

    Geez, 26.

I was just thinking of a female cousin of mine that died suddenly at aged 28 twenty years ago. About the children she might have had, etc, if she had survived, all the family life she missed out on, and her parents that missed out on seeing all that.

    RIP.

Look on the bright side, her children might have grown up to be serial killers who slaughtered a young victim destined to find a cure for homicidal psychopaths who turned into serial killers destined to kill.........

If one isn't a strong and confident ocean swimmer, certainly during rough conditions, than one shouldn't pursue such activity.

^ Nope, not in this case.. their own silly fault for ignoring the ban on swimming + being reckless in high waves.

Another pissed up Farang ignores the rules and goes swimming in very dangerous waters.

Unfortunately is lost to the elements due to no fault of Thailand or Thais.

That's how it really was eh.

Toyland is a dangerous country (full stop)...

That being said, any country is dangerous for careless/stupid people who leave their brain at home on holiday. What happened to personal responsibility?

I will be the first dude to stand up for Farang, who have been hard done by/hurt/killed by reckless Thais.. fair is fair... but when they bring it on themselves... that's another kettle of fish..

    " Personal responsibility. "

Now there is a good quote Richard, we can be on the same page on this one.

So many Farang get fuked up in this shit-house simply because they leave their personal responsibility card at the Air Port.

So when they get fuked up the other silly farang come out of the Wood work and blame it on the Thais.

I find these Farang to be utter rubbish, they should be all herded down the river and Offed.

    Something like that anyway.

I did not read that news flash about Fat Bastards being shot on sight.

I'm rather upset i missed it, what a great idea that is EH.

The General must of thought of it with a bit of urging from The Donald.

Whilst Thailand is not the most health and safety conscious example. I must say, it's the sea that's dangerous, the sea... I live close to the cliff top in SE England , I see and hear the shout go up for the lifeboat because some idiot(s) have decided to take a dip. Rough seas, freezing temp. Pissed up from a nightclub straight to the beach.
