Girl, 6, playing with dad's gun shoots sister dead

CHIANG MAI -- A 6-year-old girl playing with her father's handgun shot and killed her 7-year-old sister at their home on Tuesday, deputy provincial police chief Pol Col Piyapan Pattarapongsin said.

He said that according Pol Col Atthapol Meesiang, acting chief of Mae Taeng district police station, the incident occurred about 6pm on Tuesday at Vichai Sinlee's house in tambon Ban Chang, Daily News online reported.

Mr Vichai left his house to attend a village party, leaving his two daughters, aged 6 and 7, at home.

The younger sister apparenty went into Mr Vichai's room, took her father's .38 Colt pistol from his wardrobe and began playing with it.

She accidentally fired a shot, and the bullet hit her elder sister in the head.

The girl was pronounced dead on arrival at the district hospital

A 6 year old girl is not strong enough to hold up a loaded hand gun and then have the finger strength to pull the trigger.
Arrest the father, he pinned it on his daughter.

A lot of Thai guns are home made, and not very reliable. Hair-trigger pistols don't take much finger pressure to fire.

The stupid thing was keeping the gun loaded, as most pistols (apart from revolvers) need a magazine to be clipped in before use, and the mag's kept separately until needed.

My guess is that the gun was a home made job without a magazine, carrying a single shot in the chamber.

I sold my revolver when my boy was 4, too tempting. You can file down the trigger sears on many revolvers to reduce pressure from around 8lbs down to very little, making it easy for a 6 year old to pull but it also make sit more accurate on the range to shoot in single action. Mine was set at around 3 lbs. I miss the gun but my boy is exactly the type to play with it.

US gunmakers are trying to make guns more difficult to shoot by accident but a child can be very ingenious.

Gunpowder and drinking do not mix, very gritty and ruins the whisky.
