Patient killed as emergency ambulance hit by pickup

An emergency patient was killed and three people injured when an ambulance from Surat Thani Hospital was struck by a hit-and-run pickup truck on Tuesday night.

The accident happened at the Bang Yai intersection in Surat Thani as the ambulance rushed 30-year-old Anucha Noosuntia, who had been injured in an earlier accident in Tambon Khun Talay, to the hospital.

Two nurses, Piangsom Soompradit, 39, and Piyawan Chansuk, 29, were flung out of the ambulance and found unconscious on the road. Anucha died instantly, according to police.

Ambulance driver Chanchai Kueankaew, 42, suffered slight injuries to his legs and arms.

Police said the ambulance was struck by the pickup truck before hitting another car.

The truck driver fled before police arrived at the scene and they are now examining CCTV footage to track him down.

The sheer infantilism of people in this country demonstrating their irresponsibility is breathtaking.

Quite simply, they truly are headless chickenheads.

    Still rings true.
There is no universal measurement of caution or respect regarding EMS vehicles, ambulances, fire, or police.

Basic instinctive conditioning to pull-over or stop has never been societally acquired. Sad...

True, I was surprised (not really but that's the idea) a couple of months ago to see videos on facebook aimed at Thai motorists to entice them to give way to emergency vehicles ...this is part of the driving' ABC in many countries

Where I come from if you see an ambulance in your rear vision mirror with lights flashing and sirens sounding you immediately pull over and give them safe passage so that who ever is in the back of the Ambo might stand half a chance of getting to the doctor, it's just common sense . Somchai doesn't seem to get this, they wonder why so many accidents? Basically they don't give a fuck, unless it fucks with there rice bowl.

I don't think it's reckless indifference though. Their failure to react to the presence of an ambulance with its sirens and lights flashing resolves mainly to sheer stupidity in its purest form i.e. they are quite simply incapable of making the connection between what to us is an obvious signifier of an emergency situation and the need to take evasive action. These people are mostly, genetically and congenitally, dumb as a box of rocks and really need to be told what to do. They quite simply cannot think for themselves.

But, one must remember in terms of evolutionary need, most Thai are scarcely two swings out of an environment that was their home since they were amoeba and so they really do have a lot of catching up to do.

    http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2016/09/2...ambulance-lane

This first emergency lane is only two kilometers long but it’s in a very well-traveled area — it stretches from Din Daeng junction to Rajavithi Hospital
There is no strict fine or punishment for using the lane by non-emergency vehicles but, rather, allowing emergency vehicles exclusive use of the lane is on a voluntary basis.
Hopefully, drivers will think of the injured people in the ambulance and not that they’re trying to meet their friends at happy hour.

It doesn't help that the ambulances always have their emergency lights on regardless of whether they're carrying patients.
we have a friend who drives an ambulance up here and I asked him why the lights are always on. He reckons it looks good

    Excellent example.

I once had the great pleasure of watching Somchai and Twatporn load up a pick-up with six large sheets of tempered glass which weighed a ton but were not secured because they thought the weight of the load was sufficient to anchor it in position given the sheets were pointing down at the back of cab with the other end pointing up in the air but over the tailgate.

They drove off going up hill.

Took them about an hour to sweep up all the fragments but the noise of the breakage was quite the loudest thing I have heard outside of a thunderclap directly overhead. And of course, they spent the whole time grinning at each other.

Dumbest folk on the planet and better than watching Blackadder.
