CHIANG RAI, 2 September 2016 (NNT) - The Akha hill tribespeople of Saen Jai village in Chiang Rai province joined hands with Doi Saen Jai School to protect the Mae Fah Luang crab, which exist only in Thailand.
Akha residents in Mae Salong subdistrict as well as students and teachers from Doi Saen Jai School formed an alliance to preserve a natural habitat of Mae Fah Luang crabs. They are said to be a rare species of crabs endemic to the Kingdom.
Students at Doi Saen Jai School got to learn about the animals and ways to protect them. They also had a chance to enter a nationwide school project competition held by the Teachers Council of Thailand and won first prize for their project on Mae Fah Luang crabs.
Their habitat is located along 300 meters of the Huai Mae Salap Creek. The area provides unique environmental conditions that make the crab appear brighter and more colorful. Local residents living nearby have also been told to refrain from poaching them.
