City proposes restrictions on vehicle sales

City proposes restrictions on vehicle sales Traffic skyrockets as cars outstrip people.

Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has proposed an initiative to ban new car purchases for people who don't have a place to park their vehicles, as part of a raft of new measures to combat traffic congestion.

Speaking at a forum on city traffic management Wednesday, the governor said car buyers should have to bring proof to the dealership that they have parking spots or they would not be allowed to purchase a car.

Other suggestions to tackle traffic include the introduction of fines for parking along roads and causing congestion in business districts; and higher parking fees at lots in central Bangkok to encourage drivers to leave their vehicles at home.

Japan do that, in Tokyo at least. But I think it would be quite hard to implement in Thailand, too many loopholes (fake justificatives, bribe to get the pass and so on...), it's easier to fine, block or tow away the cars parked wrongfully...

I agree with others, the major traffic issue in Bangkok is once you get out of the elevated highways that funnel quite easily thousands of cars from other districts of the city, suburbs and other provinces directly to the city economic centers, you get stuck in traffic jam because the roads at ground level are mostly unadapted , and it get worst in the sois ...

That's the same crap London does so that the wealthy cunts can cruise to work in their Bentleys thankful the lower class masses have been taxed out of their way.

Same idea as keeping the lower classes away from the lifeboats....too British.

I was gong to suggest a charge depending on the type of car but all that would happen is the wealthy would most likely buy a cheap city car.
There is a lot more Toyota's compared with Bentley and Ferrari so its better to get rid of the majority less pollution few traffic jams.

Vehicles can be on the spot fined for having a driver only and no passenger at peak times/ workdays.
. Car pooling is the way to go .. Public transport seems fully booked in Bkk rush hrs.
