A wild mushroom picker who went missing on July 30 while foraging for wild mushrooms in Phu Khieu wildlife sanctuary in Chaiyaphum province with six other villagers was found dead in the jungle.

A search and rescue operation was launched by forestry officials after villagers of Ban Nong Phai in Tambon Nong Pone-ngarm, Kasetsomboon district, reported to them the missing of 51-year old Rungroj Suwannarat.

It was believed that Mr Rungroj strayed away from the other six mushroom pickers as he scoured the forest floor looking for mushrooms and when he realized that he was lost, he tried to find the way home but could not.

The search team traced the strong stench emitting from the jungle and finally found the decomposed body of a man believed to be that of Mr Rungroj.

Dr Panattha Satthakul, a doctor at Kasetsomboon district hospital, said she suspected Mr Rungroj died of heart failure from fatigue, lack of food and water as he struggled desperately to find the way out of the jungle.
