Phuket Expat in Coma After Patong Motorcycle Crash

PHUKET: An Australian expat, Louise Warren, is in a coma in the intensive care unit at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City after a motorcycle crash in Patong.

It's believed she was alone on the bike when it crashed on the road behind Jungceylon shopping mall on Friday evening.

Her family has been notified. It is believed Ms Warren taught at Patong Language School.

An unusually high proportion of expats and tourists are involved in crashes on Phuket, mostly involving motorcycles.

Question. Do they rent scooters to people with foreign driving license but not a foreign motorcycle license?
Here and Indonesia as examples are not countries where you "learn" how to ride. It sounds like a good laugh until...

Aussie Expat Teacher Fights Back After Being Run Over by Patong Water Truck

    Phuketwan
    May 18, 2015
    By Prasit Tarnsirisin

Popular Australian expat teacher Louise Warren faces at least one more operation after being run over and seriously injured by a water truck in Patong.

Ms Warren, aged 28, was pulled from under the water truck in the road behind Jungceylon shopping mall about 10.50pm on Friday. She had somehow fallen from her motorcycle and slid under the truck. At least one truck wheel ran over her chest and abdomen, inflicting serious injuries.

''A total of 32 pints of blood were needed to help Ms Warren through her ordeal,'' a spokesperson for Vachira Phuket Hopital in Phuket City said today. ''The hospital could now use more A+ blood.''

Ms Warren is still in the intensive care unit but her condition had improved a little, according to the spokesperson. She was originally taken to Patong Hospital before being transferred to Vachira.

Members of her family were already on Phuket, Phuketwan has been told.

Ms Warren taught at the Patong Language School and had been on Phuket for at least three years.

A disproportionate number of expats and tourists are injured or killed in crashes on Phuket roads, especially in incidents involving motorcycles.

Ok I know this is an emergency situation and she has little choice , presumably in a normal surgery procedure blood is sourced and well tested before the op

so they get 32 pints of blood from presumably 32 different people and with such a high HIV infection rate in Thailand , and the fact it takes up to 3 months to show up if you have the virus , it must feel like playing russian roulette .

Is there any way they can be sure of the quality of the blood they are transfusing ?

The other day when we were talking Insurance for Expats some posters were saying that if a foreigner is legally employed with a work permit they are covered for Health insurance.

So is this true or not. ?
