Five Busy Roads With Worst Traffic Jams In Bangkok

    Thai PBS News
    November 14, 2014

The Transport Ministry has revealed five busiest roads in the capital that have the worst traffic jams with traffic flow speed of 24.34 kilometres an hour.

    The five busiest roads are:

    1. Ngamwongwan road from Yaek Kaelai to Yaek Kaset.
    2. Sri Ayutthaya road from Yaek Makkasan to Yaek Sisao Theves.
    3. Sukhumvit road from Yaek Bang Na to Yaek Ploenjit.
    4. Phaholyothin road from Yaek Laksi to Yaek Lardprao.
    5. Ratchadapisek road from Yaek Ratchavibha to Yaek Rama 9.

The ministry said average traffic flow speed from Yaek Kaelai to Yaek Kaset has dropped from 36.95 kms/hr in 2011 to 24.34 kms/hr in 2013.

It said main reasons for the traffic jams on this section of the road were gridlocks where continuous queues of vehicles block an entire network of intersecting roads, construction of subway and sky train projects, railway crossings, and toll gates of the expressway system where vehicles queuing up to pay toll.

It also said there are 34 railway crossings which cause traffic jams in the capital. They included Yommaraj, Sri Ayutthaya, Ratchavithi, Nakhon Chaisri, Sethsiri, Ranong 1, Pradipat, Prachanives, Ngamwongwan, Chaengwattana, Talad Son Mueang Kao, Air Force HQ.

I suspect that the method for calculating the average speed is slightly flawed by only including the time during which the vehicles are actually moving, or the statistics were collected in the middle of the night.

If the amount of time vehicles spend at a dead stop is included, that 24.34 km/hr figure might drop to something like 3 km/hr at peak hours.

I use number 5 every morning, it's about an 8km stretch.

I generally get along there faster than it takes to get from my home on Thong Lor to Petchburi Road which is about half a kilometre.

In fact my office is on the crossroads of 4 and 5.....

Either that or piss poor road junction design or the police who control the traffic lights, vehicles stopped in the centre lane who want to turn right, vehicles in the outside lane who really want to turn left. Sukhumvit gets blocked at On Nut because of the one lane U turn with three lanes trying to go there.

Traffic control needs to revert to the BMA.

It amuses me that during Loy Kratng the floating lanterns were banned in Chiang Mai because disruption of flights would cost $2 m yet everyday in Bangkok more than that is wasted with people stuck in traffic. But the real reason is the 1st time car buyers scheme to placate car companies over the flood.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
