    Armed Forces Let 'Half-Thais' Serve

    Bangkok Post
    October 25, 2014

The Defense Council has endorsed a proposed amendment to a ministerial regulation to allow a Thai national to serve in the armed forces if just one parent has Thai citizenship.

Previously, both parents were required to be Thai before people could enroll.

Defence spokesman Khongcheep Tantrawanich said the change was made in line with the changing security situation and to better respond to the armed forces' needs.

Under the regulation which was introduced in 1963, Thai nationals who are eligible to serve in the military services must be born of a father and a mother who both have Thai citizenship.

Col Khongcheep said the armed forces' recruitment of personnel especially in specialist fields has been limited by the regulation.

He said the amended regulation allows a Thai national born of a parent with Thai citizenship to apply for employment in the three armed services, at both commissioned and non-commissioned levels.

However, the 1963 regulation on the nationality requirement still applies to candidates seeking to enroll in military schools and education institutions under supervision of the Defense Ministry, Col Khongcheep said.

Sounds like they need more to send to the southern provinces.

Excellent news to help accelerate the learning to English language throughout the armed forces.

Still won't be a good scenario for an intelligent 'offspring' when they're still not allowed to enroll to attend the Military Academies.

Exactly what type of commissioned future can there be ?

According to Thai law a 50/50 child is supposed to choose either Thai or farang citizenship on reaching 18. So I believe. So the above must mean that Thailand now recognize that someone can have dual nationality and serve?

If your son gets conscripted you can pay a bounty to have him excluded, if picked. I did know the sum involved but I've forgotten.

I read it differently. Born with one Thai parent can serve in the lower ranks. But to go to military school/college and join the club must be pure Thai.

Of course unless a significant donation was made.

Why anyone would want to die for Thailand I have no idea.

Why anyone would want to die for any country is beyond me.

You've a lot to learn in life Yaso.
Obviously you know nothing about camaraderie. Other than spelling it is beyond you.

No but I'd put myself on the line for others that would do the same for me. 'To die for ones country' is just an expression.

Yaso I was a serving soldier and put myself out for others many a time. And so they did for me. Until you've been in that kind of environment Yaso you'll never understand. Anyone who's played rugby, or similar sport, will know what I mean. Obviously Yaso you never played sport?

    As i posted before.

I played many sports and accomplished at many.

Tell you a little story about my brother, who was in the Army for 18 yrs and was in front line combat zones.

He stills smells the shit, of one of his friends that was killed beside him, he still remembers the incompetent officers that put him and his friends in a area that got two of his friends killed.

He still remembers one of his officers doing a runner, that left his platoon behind.

He still can't adapt to Civvy st after 20 yrs, and still has nightmares and can't hold down a relationship.

He regularly attends combat stress in the UK, and all he gets from it is meeting up with fellas that talk about there experiences in the forces.

Thats one of the reasons i would rather play sports in my younger days.

The three branches of the Thai military have rugby teams.
If his skills are a good'un they'll recruit to put him on the field playing his service time.
The coach will probably instill a hard work ethic such as , "Give it your all or there's always a rifle for you to carry in Pattani."

As he's 11 , don't sweat it too much now as nobody knows the conscription details 7 years down the road.

At present if he goes to University he will be exempt. The Thai military lottery is for those who have ended their schooling.
Caveat: This could all possibly change once ASEAN kicks in or if terrorist attacks possibly move out of the south into the heart of Thai or designated tourism
    areas (IMO).
