Iron rods producers want government bans imports from China

Over ten iron rods or wrought iron producers lodged a complaint with Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha on Thursday demanding a stop of iron rods imports from China claiming that they may cause serious damage to iron rods industry in Thailand.

Mr Thana Ruangsilasingh who represented the iron rods producers said that Chinese-made iron rods for construction are cheaper than the local products because the Chinese exporters were given support by their government and that the Chinese products are exempted from customs taxation.

He pointed out that there is no need for the imports because local supplies are sufficient to meet the demand and also Chinese iron rods are not up to the standard.

He said the Thai government should follow the example of others in the region which impose a ban on import of iron rods for construction to protect local industry.

Fair. If Thailand has a surplus and can produce 100% of local demand then they should ask for industry protection.

Usually what happens is the local industry asks for tax on imports but sells local products for the imported+duty price. Say 10%. The business is not sustainable unless they can get the extra revenue equivalent to the duty.

Same happened when one company tried to get duty applied to copper imports, but in 1997 it all went wrong ... their business model only worked if duty was levied on imports. Buy the time the plant was completed they could not supply 100% of the countries need so....

I may be wrong, but I'm guessing it is also local companies that are importing those steel rods from China. The established fat cats just don't want to share their turf with the newcomers.
