This was the story in the Nation before Somyot took over the investigation. Was it the 9 million US that changed the story so drastically? The timing is just too coincidental.

Police seeking former village headman's son who fled island

Police are looking for the son of a former Koh Tao village headman in their pursuit of the killers of two British backpackers on the night of September 14, after learning that the man left the island the following morning.
A police source said the man they want to find landed on the Surat Thani coast and disappeared. Police say they want to interrogate him first.
The police last night released two men, who own Intouch Bar and AC Pub on the resort island, after interrogating them for three hours and finding no evidence linking them to the crime.
One of the two men released last night, who reporters did not identify, said he was unable to contact his son and did not know if he had a hand in the killings.
Another man, the younger brother of the former village headman, who is believed to be the man seen on a security camera near the crime scene, is still in custody.
Pol Lt-General Panya Mamen, who is overseeing the investigation, said yesterday that the headman’s son is believed to be hiding in Bangkok. Panya refused to reveal the suspects’ names, saying police were questioning one man and expected to arrest another in Bangkok today.
Today marks the 10th day since David Miller and Hannah Witheridge were brutally murdered on the island. Both suffered serious head wounds, while police said Witheridge was also sexually assaulted.
“We expect results within 48 hours as DNA samples have been sent out for testing, and we are confident in this latest turn in the investigation,” he said.
All sides should have confidence in the police investigation and believe that no scapegoats will be arrested so that the case can be closed, he said.
“The world has been watching the case and police has been doing what it can to ensure that the evidence obtained is strong and tight enough to arrest the killers,” he said.
Panya also promised that the investigation would not be influenced by reports that some influential persons on the island might try to obstruct police work.
The chief investigator was speaking after police had summoned the owner of the Intouch Bar for questioning after investigators discovered that both victims had visited the bar and had had an altercation before they were found dead. Another person summoned was the owner of AC Pub, who local residents say is an influential person and the older brother of the man who owns Intouch Bar. Panya led the interrogation of both individuals.
Local people and tourism operators on the island yesterday attended an annual religious rite to make merit for their deceased loved ones. They also made merit for the slain Britons and prayed that the police would be able to arrest the killers.
Meanwhile, a police source said it was not possible that people on the island did not have any knowledge of what might have happened on the night of the murder. The source said may be they don’t want to talk to police, as they do not want to have problems with an influential group.
Udom Tantiprasonchai, an executive with Orient Thai Airways, said he will add Bt500,000 to the bounty placed for arrest of the killers, Senee Puwasettathaworn, president of Koh Samui Tourism Association, said.
This sum will bring the total bounty up to Bt713,000.
Though the murders took place more than a week ago, and police have yet to charge anyone, tourism has not been affected too badly as it is still the low season. Local tourism operators, meanwhile, said they would not put any pressure on police, leaving them to focus on the job at hand.

If I'm not mistaken that would have been around the time that he sanctioned the chief investigator that took in Mon and all but named others on the island, be replaced the next day by a new chief investigator that found the Burmese.

Petition asking for investigation into Thailand deaths handed in to UK government

Credit: ITV NewsA petition has been handed in to the UK government asking them to investigate deaths in the Thai island of Koh Tao.
It was set-up by mother Pat Harrington - whose son Ben died on there six years ago.
Jerseyman David Miller was also killed there in 2014.

The petition is asking for the Government to act on all suspicious deaths in Thailand.
We would like them to make people aware of what they're going out to - even though it's a wonderful country, it's beautiful, there are risks taken when you go out there.
Mrs May can lead this forward, she can talk to the Foreign Office Minister and ask them to interact and be more forceful in what happens in Thailand, give more support to all the families whose children are dying and give more support to the whole country with a website showing the dangers.

The truth probably not hard to discern by any who lived there, the prospect of closure and justice I'd regret is slim.

I'm sure UK police are well aware how things work here. It's tough on the families but sure not to be the last.

The full , loon , sex n drugs rock n roll , sun, biking without a helmet is so attractive to kids in nanny states and I don't imagine it'll change.

Handy for the pooyais there's an endless supply of poor foreign fall guys. If former political leaders cannot get justice poor skivvies are perfect patsy's

Family of Kiwi-born 'Death Island' victim suspect foul play and Thai police corruption

    Stuff News
    New Zealand

Margaret and Boyne Annesley with daughter Christina.

The families of young tourists who died on Thailand's notorious Koh Tao island under suspicious circumstances - including that of a Wellington woman - are fighting for justice with a petition to the UK government.

Over the past few years about a dozen young tourists have been murdered or found dead under suspicious circumstances on the resort - dubbed "Death Island".

The group of grieving relatives includes the parents of Christina Marian Annesley, 23, who was born in Lower Hutt and was found dead in the Koh Tao bungalow where she was staying in January 2015.

Welllington-born Christina Annesley's parents are part of a group of families whose children died while on Koh Tao under suspicious circumstances petitioning for justice in the UK.

"As a follow up to our lovely daughter's loss three years ago in Koh Tao we have joined with other families who have lost children on that not so lovely Island," Boyne and Margaret Annesley said.

They think their daughter - whose death is still unexplained - may have died from an alcohol and prescribed medication combination but are now also suspicious it could have been foul play.

The families of British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller - who were brutally killed on Koh Tao in 2014 - are part of the campaign for justice that also includes the Annesleys.

"We say this because of the incompetent - at the least - authorities over there."
Koh Tao is the same island where British couple Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were murdered in 2014.

The Annesleys say Thai police did not interview the last person to see Christina alive while a man arrested then exonerated in the Witheridge/Miller murders - Montriwat Tuwichian - also owned the bungalow where Christina was found dead.

Thai resort Koh Tao was dubbed ''Death Island'' after a spate of suspicious tourist deaths over recent years.

"[Hannah and David] were supposedly killed by the two Burmese but none of their DNA was found on the bodies.

"The UK coroner returned an open verdict because most evidence was not in a good state because of incompetence or deliberate mishandling," Annesley's father Boyne said.

Her body was left in a temple for days before a postmortem was done while the UK coroner the Annesleys contacted upon her arrival back home did not accept the Thai results.

Thai national police chief Police General Somyot Poompanmoung (centre) stands next to two detained workers from Myanmar, suspected of killing Miller and Witheridge tourists on Koh Tao in 2014.

The Annesleys were among a group who delivered a petition to British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday calling for better translation services, and for warnings to be issued for countries where multiple young Britons had died.

Last year Britain's Independent newspaper warned tourists to steer clear of the island, claiming it was in the "iron grip of a mafia family, who demanded protection money, controlled the local police force and were not above attacking or burning down the homes and businesses of people that crossed them."

Laura Daniels, sister of Hannah Withebridge murdered on Koh Tao with her friend David Miller in 2014 sent out this message recently:

"I don’t normally share publications from gutter press like The Sun... but in this instance, the more people who see this the better. How many more people have to be raped and/or murdered before people start taking the risks seriously and choose alternative holiday destinations? I appreciate that every country has risks and that atrocities and fatalities happen everywhere... but Koh Tao is such a tiny island, and rapes and murders of tourists are now so frequent that it’s no longer surprising to see articles like this in the news. The island is run and controlled by a family from the Thai mafia. In a country where drug possession is deemed a more serious crime than murder I would suggest, that if you choose to travel here, to warn your loved ones that your return date will be ‘if’ you return rather than ‘when’. If you’re sat thinking ‘it’ll never happen to me’ then you are misinformed... every family (all of the ones who have made contact with me) whose loved one has been raped or murdered since we lost Hannah have all had one thing in common... they all say that their loved one tried to reassure them, before travelling to koh tao, saying ‘it won’t happen to me’. Wake up and smell the coffee people... NO ONE is immune. It’s now dubbed ‘death island’ for a reason... don’t be its next statistic ."

Meanwhile, two innocent Burmese men rot in prison while the real Thai killers run around free.

‘Cruel, completely inaccurate and callous’ - family describe anguish as Hannah Witheridge troll jailed

Paul Hind, 38, speaks to the media outside South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court, where he admitted trolling relatives of young people who died in tragic circumstances. Picture: PA Wire/PA Images

Laura Witheridge’s comments came as Paul Hind was handed 14 months in prison for targeting four families, including Hannah’s, with “indecent or grossly offensive” material.
The brutal murder of Hannah Witheridge from Hemsby on the Thai island of Koh Tao four years ago sent shockwaves across the world and sent Norfolk into mourning.
In a statement Miss Witheridge described the distress Hind’s action had caused and outlined her hopes the sentence will serve as a warning to others.
She said: “The trolling incident that found me phoning the police back in March this year, and which is relevant to the sentencing today was one of the most callous and cowardly I have had to endure.
“This one was deeply rooted, especially dark and unusual.
“It was obviously invented and executed to upset my family and those who loved Hannah but, unlike the others, it was as much of an attack on Hannah as it was on my family.
“Creating an offensive, inaccurate, fraudulent twitter profile in Hannah’s name and following everyone from the friends list of her authentic profile saw this particular offender stooping to new lows.
“Photos were stolen from Hannah’s accounts and the profile biography created was cruel, completely inaccurate and callous.
“Sending me crime scene photos and death threats is one thing, but creating a fake profile in the name of a victim of a brutal murder is something else entirely.
“Hannah is unable to defend herself. Trolling the living is terrible enough, but targeting the deceased is an absolute atrocity.
“Losing someone you love, suddenly, in tragic circumstances is the most painful thing imaginable. I don’t believe that, unless you have been in such a position, you can truly comprehend how torturous and unbearable it is.
“Back in March, for the first time ever, I was told something could be done. I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that today offers some justice for my family, and all of the other families involved in this case… and I hope it sends a strong message that sitting in a dark room, hiding behind a computer screen does not make you untraceable. I hope today serves as an example that crimes of this nature do come with consequence.”
Paul Hind, 38, from Hexham, Northumberland appeared at Newcastle Magistrates Court on Thursday August 30 and pleaded guilty to four separate offences of conveying false and indecent information which was indecent or grossly offensive.
In addition to the death of Hannah Witheridge, Hind also targeted the families of Olivia Burt from Hampshire, who was found dead outside a nightclub in Durham in Februrary, Leicester’s Joe Tilley, 24, who was found dead at the bottom of a waterfall in Colombia in May and 19-year-old Duncan Sim, from Duns, in the Scottish Borders, whose remains were found at West Sands in St Andrews earlier this year.
Detective Inspector Matt Dyson said: “This is a case that remains deeply personal to the victims.
“By directly targeting family members of Hannah Witheridge the messages he sent were clearly criminal and particularly distasteful.
“Norfolk Police will continue to actively identify and prosecute any people that may carry out similar acts in the future and we continue to support Hannah’s family.”
    The statement in full
September is a difficult month. It was the month that my sister Hannah’s life was suddenly and unnecessarily cut short.
This also sees it being the month that the trolling is at its worst.
I remember, vividly, every detail of the day we learnt of Hannah’s murder.
One of the details amongst my memories of that horrendous, life-changing day is the moment we were warned by the police that, due to the high profile nature of the case, we could expect to be targeted by internet trolls. I remember my disbelief… my insistence that the information we were being given could not be true… after all, the worst thing possible had just happened to Hannah, why would anybody want to intensify our agony?
Now, of course, I know how very wrong I was. Within hours of Hannah’s murder hitting the headlines, the trolling began.
Hundreds of message poured into my accounts on social media.
Some were well-wishers. Others were not.
From fake offensive profiles, heinous messages, crime scene photos, to death threats… I was receiving them all. So, as you might expect, I came off social media and refrained from opening any further messages.
I didn’t delete my account entirely as I didn’t want to lose messages from Hannah. As the weeks passed, hundreds of unopened messages piled up.
I learnt that no matter how much you privatise your Facebook profile, there is no way to stop people that you do not know, from sending you a message request.
I found myself having to regularly ask our police family liaison officer to log in on my behalf to clear out my message box.
I reassured myself that, in time, these monsters would get bored and it would all stop.
Again, I was wrong. The quantity of messages has reduced over the past four years but they have not stopped. Just earlier this year, things were particularly bad, but one of the main offender’s IP address was found to be in the United States, so, like all the times before, nothing could be done.
Losing someone you love, suddenly, in tragic circumstances is the most painful thing imaginable. I don’t believe that, unless you have been in such a position, you can truly comprehend how torturous and unbearable it is.
I have tried as hard as I am able, to keep Hannah’s memory alive and to push on and be the best that I can be, because I know it is what she would want me to do… Hannah was beautiful inside and out.
She was ambitious and hard working and saw the best in everyone.
She was half way through her Masters degree in Speech and Language Therapy when she died. She would have gone on to make a difference to the lives of many.
The trolling incident that found me phoning the police back in March this year, and which is relevant to the sentencing today was one of the most callous and cowardly I have had to endure.
This one was deeply rooted, especially dark and unusual.
It was obviously invented and executed to upset my family and those who loved Hannah but, unlike the others, it was as much of an attack on Hannah as it was on my family.
Creating an offensive, inaccurate, fraudulent twitter profile in Hannah’s name and following everyone from the friends list of her authentic profile saw this particular offender stooping to new lows.
Photos were stolen from Hannah’s accounts and the profile biography created was cruel, completely inaccurate and callous.
Sending me crime scene photos and death threats is one thing, but creating a fake profile in the name of a victim of a brutal murder is something else entirely. Hannah is unable to defend herself.
Trolling the living is terrible enough, but targeting the deceased is an absolute atrocity. Even though the likely motivation was to cause distress to Hannah’s loved ones, the fact that her identity was fraudulently used to achieve this is despicable.
I have somehow found the strength and courage to try and live as normal a life as I can since we lost Hannah.
I work full time, I contribute to society and, other than attending the trial of Hannah’s murderers in Thailand, today is the first time I have attended court.
Some days, even getting out of bed seems impossible, but I do it anyway.
I have never used the tragedy, which was bestowed upon my family, as an excuse.
Despite very depleted stores, I have always plucked up the courage to push on. Doing so eats away at all of my emotional strength, and I have little left to spare on cowards who hide behind computer screens. It may not cause me physical harm, but the emotional harm is devastating.
Too many times you hear of the harm caused by trolls.
Lives cut short in some instances.
I think it is terrifying that we live in a world that is becoming more and more dominated by technology every day, yet we have so little control over it.
Perhaps it is moving faster than we are.
I have spent 4 years being told, time and time again, that nothing can be done, which makes this particular case so poignant.
Back in March, for the first time ever, I was told something could be done.
I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that today offers some justice for my family, and all of the other families involved in this case… and I hope it sends a strong message that sitting in a dark room, hiding behind a computer screen does not make you untraceable.
I hope today serves as an example that crimes of this nature do come with consequence.
