The summoning of the Thai diplomat to the Foreign Office is timely and a shot across the bows of those orchestrating the Burmese frame - up.
But it is curious in that the Foreign minister concerned, Hugo Swire, has stated that among other issues he and the British public were dismayed by the conduct of the Thai police in their dealings with the media. This is of course a criticism of the disgraceful attempt by the Thai authorities to tarnish the victims' reputations and the equally deplorable nonsensical attempt to implicate their friend, Christopher Ware, in their murders.
Yet, only last week the British ambassador in Bangkok, Mark Kent, was reported in the Bangkok Post to have stated his satisfaction with the conduct of the police investigation and indeed was photographed, somewhat cheesily, among the Royal Thai Police celebrating the appointment of their new commander.
So, is Mark Kent due for a recall? Or is it now normal strategy to have an ambassador publicly say one thing and then, equally publically, be contradicted by his boss in London?
Personally, I think Kent was an idiot for attending that celebration but did he in fact say what he is widely reported to have said and which has since been re - quoted by no less than the current Prime Minister?
Kent needs to account for himself. Either he's made a balls up of this or he's been stitched up.
