American Murdered in Krabi: Son Knifed in Long Horn Saloon Tragedy - Phuket Wan

    Wednesday, July 31, 2013
PHUKET: An American was stabbed to death early today in a bar in the Thai holiday province of Krabi because he refused to stopped singing, police said.

The man's son, who was also singing with his father, was seriously wounded in the attack at the Long Horn Saloon in Ao Nang, a coastal resort town.

The dead man has been named as Bobby Carter, 51, and his son is Adam Hayes Carter, 27.

Three men are under arrest for the murder, say police.

The killing took place when three local men objected to the Carters hogging singing time at the saloon about 1am today, officers said.

The dead man and his son were taken to Krabi Hospital and the son was transferred to Bangkok Phuket Hospital in Phuket, a neighboring province also noted for tourism, early today.

Three men have been arrested for stabbing the two American with sharpened steel rods, a preferred local weapon.

The three men are Ratikorn Ramin, 27, Sathit Somsa, 40, and Noppanan Yoddecha, 26. They are being held in Krabi.

Adam Carter declined a request for an interview today. He appeared to be in reasonable condition and able to talk when reporters called at his room.

It's believed the stabbing took place out the front of the saloon.

The killing is bound to reignite the issue of tourist safety in Thailand. Police are using more security cameras on Phuket and have introduced ''Safety Zones'' in key tourist areas, including the nightlife hub of Patong, on the west coast.

Krabi is further off the beaten tourism track and not as much attention has been paid to safety there. The best-known destination in Krabi is the offshore 20-something rites-of-passage island of Phi Phi.

Krabi has been the scene of several violent crimes against tourists in the past 18 months, including the unprovoked knife attack on a British man strolling home with his girlfriend.

A German woman had a thumb cut off in another attack.

The notorious rape of a Dutch tourist in Krabi triggered her father to pen and sing a viral YouTube song about justice and revenge, 'Evil Man from Krabi.'

Drummer T Wielded Weapon that Stabbed American, Says Long Horn Manager - Phuket Wan

PHUKET: Details were emerging today of the murder of an American tourist in the Thai holiday province of Krabi as local officials prepared for a deluge of unwanted publicity.

It's understood that five to seven people were with American Bobby Cater, 51, and his son Adam, 27, when a night out turned to tragedy.

The manager of the Long Horn Saloon in Ao Nang, a holiday port on the coast, told Phuketwan today that two of the people with the Carters were women.

The manager, Wanchai ''Dew'' Potata, said today that he wasn't a witness to the murder but he had seen what happened inside the Long Horn.

The men accused of the killing were all members of the band that played live at the Long Horn, Khun Dew said, usually with a female singer.

The Long Horn, on the beach road north of Ao Nang, has a low stage with instruments for the band in place and a spot at the front where members of the audience sometimes perform.

''The Carters put some money into the 'tip' box before singing,'' Khun Dew said. ''Then there was some kind of dispute and they took the money back out again.

''One or both of the Carters wanted to keep singing, but the band wanted to stop,' he said.

The dispute inside the Long Horn was followed by a fight outside, about 30 metres away, Khun Dew said. At least one sharpened steel rod, a preferred local weapon, was used in the killing.

''The man who is accused of using the steel rod is a drummer, 'T','' Khun Dew said. ''He denies the killing but says it's possible that Mr Carter fell on the steel rod as they scuffled.''

Khun Dew said that the Long Horn had been open for about two years. Customers enjoyed it from 4pm, he said, with live music from 10pm to midnight and a closing time of 1am.

The murder took place about that time, according to a spokesperson at Krabi Hospital, in Krabi Town. It's believed the Carters were staying at a five-star resort.

Nurses at the hospital, about 20 kilometres from Ao Nang, treated Adam Carter for his wounds before sending him in an ambulance to the better equipped Bangkok Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

Mr Carter appeared to be recovering this afternoon but declined to be interviewed by Phuketwan reporters.

Earlier this month, Bangkok taxi driver Chidchai Utmacha allegedly hacked to death an American expat resident, Troy Lee Pilkington, in a dispute over a $1.60 fare.

Ao Nang is a transit point for tourists who sometimes go on to Phi Phi, the popular holiday island a speedboat or ferry ride away, or try their hand rock climbing at Railay Bay, which is on the mainland but only accessible by boat.

Krabi has had more than its share of violent attacks on tourists in the past 18 months, including the alleged rape of a young Dutch woman.

The incident prompted her father, a composer and singer, to make a video in which he performs an ode to justice and revenge, 'Evil Man from Krabi.'

In other violent acts, a British man walking home with his girlfriend was hacked in Ao Nang and a young German woman needed surgery to reattach a thumb after a knife attack in Krabi Town.

Khaosod Mr. Ratikorn Romintr, 27, and his two band mates, Mr. Sathit Somsa, 40 and Mr. Nopnan Yoddecha, 26
The 3 suspects confessed to their crimes, but insisted that they had been enraged by the 2 tourists.

Fair enough, those guys did it but only because they were "enraged".

As stated, the yank probably fell on the pointed iron rod in the scuffle. Most people walk around with one of those pointing out.....

another version of the story, this one from The Nation does not mention the use of a traditional sharpened piece of steel rod, but does add the obvious 'punishable by death' offence of 'knocking the musicians’ tip box to the floor'.
I guess that makes it OK then - it is just another honour killing.
The discussion from the three band members outside the bar
    'what shall we do?'
'there's nothing to do but kill at least one of them - it was after all our tip box he knocked over'

Foreigner stabbed to death after Krabi bar row
    The Nation August 1, 2013 1:00 am

Police have arrested three Thai musicians who allegedly stabbed an American man to death and severely wounded his son after an argument in a bar in Krabi's Muang district early Wednesday morning.

The two were rushed to Bangkok Hospital Phuket after the 3am attack in Tambon Ao Nang. Bobby Carter sustained a fatal knife wound to the stomach, while his son Adam, 27, was severely beaten.

Police later arrested Ratikorn Romin, 27, Sathit Somsa, 40 and Noppanan Yoddecha, 26. According to police, the two tourists and family members visited the Little Longhorn Saloon, where the father and son joined the musicians on stage for a jam session. Carter senior apparently refused to leave the stage at the end of session, leading to an argument with the musicians.

The deceased also reportedly knocked the musicians’ tip box to the floor. The three musicians apparently sat outside the bar and another argument broke out when the group emerged from the bar before the musicians reportedly killed the man and injured his son.

I play in a 7-piece band mainly made up of Thais. I remember one night at Bangkok Beat ages ago a Middle-Eastern guy jumped on the stage and started hassling our keyboard player. I was angry as hell as security were unaware of the situation, but we kept on playing and the guy eventually went away. But the guy wasn't threatening anyone, he was just being a pain. Pro musicians just don't behave like that. These animals in Krabi are dirty pub musos, one step up from amateurs.

What angers me most of all is that with all these tourist or expat killings, how come no-one has put a contract out on the killers?

A sharpened steel rod is designed to punch a large hole in a victim that will bleed profusely, and not coagulate or heal any time soon. Nice job.

each news source adds/or confuses to what happened

Phuket Gazette has this, the old 'self-defence' argument

In his statement to police, Mr Ratikorn said, “We accept that we attacked them, but we didn’t intend to kill anyone. The father and son came to the pub and they joined us singing on the stage.

“Then we had an argument with them because they refused to stop singing when the time was up. The father knocked our tip-box to the floor. We left the stage and sat [outside] in front of the bar,” Mr Ratikorn said.

“After a while they came outside and started another argument with us. The father knocked me to the ground first, and I could not breathe because he was sitting on my chest.

“Then I spotted a sharp piece of metal nearby, so I grabbed it and stabbed him,” Mr Ratikorn said.
