I'd bet my 100 baht on this over other scenarios. Pick a fight with the locals, don't take the offered face-saving way out, and then complain that Thais don't fight properly and fairly one-on-one.

There's something about the low-class British that makes them more prone to these sorts of incidents than other nationalities... perhaps the aggressive culture and low availability of firearms. Continental Europeans tend to be a bit less lippy. Yanks are loudmouths, but used to many guns around, so tend to avoid fights (if they care to live).

none of my mates carry knives either, and i would hope most would have been smart enough to have properly dealt with the issue after the first encounter or avoid the thais altogether having failed to do so.

Mouthy pissed up British bloke gets filled in by five Thai men,even if he started the fight in my mind its never right to gang up on one.Had many fights when I was younger out with friends but never jumped in to help anyone its always been one against one.Pull another bloke of when ones had another or getting hurt bad yes. Can see similar events on any given night in any city in Britain and probably most citys in the world. One guy acts dumb and mouths off, group reacts and teaches him he is not superman. This time it was a group of Thais, as its in Thailand, but could easily be same story with same result worldwide.

Hey Dave ,well said,sense prevails at last , no one knows the true facts of what actually happened ,although some appear to know everything about it ,the only fact is that it was 5 Thai's against 1 farang who just happens to be " English" so there fore its automatically his fault ,how bloody pitiful ,the way I see it the real truth will never come out anyway cos when its a Thai's word against a farangs the farang always finish's up a very poor second ,and with respect any one who thinks different should go and seek urgent medical help.

Well Let me answer this for you Mr Dave. Firstly as I said a long time ago back in my early college days. Lots of ass beatings happened when loud mouth drunks started crap and were stupid enough to insult a group of people. Your "Noble, 10 pace one on one sword fight" approach is just that...like a movie scene. If you want to box, go to a ring. Street fights there are no rules. Obviously you have lived a sheltered life and watch a lot of TV. Fights happen. I never liked them at anytime. Calling me a "Pussy" is childish and grade school stuff. But if you makes you feel better then OK...works for me.
