Three young men were killed during a shooting in Bangkok that was believed to have stemmed from a dispute over a seized motorcycle.
Police said they received reports late Friday night of shootings in Chom Thong and Thon Buri districts of the capital. Pol Maj Gen Manit Wongsomboon, the Metropolitan Police deputy commander, along with investigators and emergency workers, rushed to the first scene in Dao Kanong, Thon Buri, to investigate.
Near a local canal bridge, police found the body of Pitikorn Buakhamsi, 22, lying face-down. He appeared to have been shot in the head, right shoulder and left knee with 9mm bullets.
Akarapong Kantarain, 18, was shot in the neck and had been taken to Taksin hospital. Forensic investigators recovered bullet casings at the scene.
The team moved on to the second location in Bang Khao, Chom Thong, where Somchai Petchpankan was found dead, shot twice in the chest.
Another 18-year-old, Narakorn Suthipho, who sustained bullet wounds, had been taken to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital and was in critical condition. Bullet casings of the same 9mm calibre found at the first scene were also collected.
Police said two other shooting victims, identified as Watanyu Suwankiet, 18, and Wanat Chuenchom, 21. Mr Watanyu was taken to Bangpakok 9 International Hospital and later reports said he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Mr Wanat was taken to Navamin 2 Hospital and now is reported to be safe.
One of the victims' friends, a 15-year-old, told the police that they had been out riding around as usual when they saw a group of eight men riding on four motorcycles at the Chom Thong intersection.
The men shouted profanities at them before chasing them down and started to open fire. The witness claimed that he had no idea what prompted the attack.
Police believe the shootings stemmed from a recent dispute, in which the attackers had confiscated one of the victims' motorcycles but had later been forced to return it. This may have angered the attackers and could have been the motive behind the shooting.
