Ang Thong: Students escape deadly snake

    Students escape deadly snake

ANG THONG - Three high school students were lucky to escape being bitten by a highly venomous snake that had hidden itself under the seat of their motorcycle, reports said.

Police said they received a report that school students needed help to remove a snake from their motorcycle, parked near the Chao Praya River bank in Muang district. When police and a rescue official arrived at the scene, the boys were spraying water at their motorcycle.

They explained that a snake was hiding inside their motorcycle, but they could no longer see it. They said they intended to head back home, but fortunately spotted the snake before they got on the bike.

Police said the rescue officer spent a lot of time revving up the motorcycle engine in a bid to scare the snake out of its hiding place and away from the bike.

After a while, a two metre Russell's Viper poked its head out from under the back seat. The snake had crawled up under the seat, police said.

“The rescue official did everything he could, but the snake wouldn’t move,” a police officer said. “Finally he was able to hook it out with a stick”

Police said the boys were lucky to have spotted the deadly snake before they jumped on the bike. They could easily have been bitten.

The snake had since been released into the wild, police said.

The Russell's Viper is one of the most dangerous snakes in Asia. Its bite is very painful, and frequently fatal to humans.

Last year I had a snake under my bike seat, I didn't call in the police, the rescue foundation, the news papers, I dealt with it myself like any self respecting man would, certainly scares the fuck out of snakes when you start screaming like a little girl

Siamese Russell's Viper (Thai: Ngu maeo saw) Scientific Name: Daboia russelii siamensis
General Characteristics : This snake grows to a maximum length of 166 cm and averages about 120 cm, although island populations do not attain this size. It is more slenderly built than most other vipers. The color pattern consists of a deep yellow, tan or brown ground color, with three series of dark brown spots that run the length of its body. Each of these spots has a black ring around it, the outer border of which is intensified with a rim of white or yellow. The dorsal spots, which usually number 23–30, may grow together, while the side spots may break apart. The head has a pair of distinct dark patches, one on each temple, together with a pinkish, salmon or brownish V or X pattern that forms an apex towards the snout. Behind the eye, there is a dark streak, outlined in white, pink or buff. The venter is white, whitish, yellowish or pinkish, often with an irregular scattering of dark spots.
Habitat / Food : It is not restricted to any particular habitat, but does tend to avoid dense forests. The snake is mostly found in open, grassy or bushy areas, but may also be found in second growth forests (scrub jungles), on forested plantations and farmland. They are most common in plains and coastal lowlands. Humid environments, such as marshes, swamps and rain forests, are avoided. They will eat just about anything, including rats, mice, shrews, squirrels, land crabs, scorpions and other arthropods. The presence of rodents is the main reason they are attracted to human habitation.
Behavior / Mating : Terrestrial and active primarily as a nocturnal forager. However, during cool weather it will alter its behavior and become more active during the day. Adults are reported to be persistently slow and sluggish unless pushed beyond a certain limit, after which they become aggressive. Juveniles, on the other hand, are generally more nervous. Mating generally occurs early in the year. The gestation period is more than six months before giving live birth. Young are produced from May to November, but mostly in June and July. It is a prolific breeder. Litters of 20–40 are common, although there may be fewer offspring and as little as one. The reported maximum is 65 in a single litter. At birth, juveniles are 215–260 mm in length.

You forgot to mention THIS, Norton :

Unlike many of the venomous snakes that are habitually shy and reclusive, the Russell's Viper tends to be more aggressive and will become threatened easily whenever a human approaches. Instead of fleeing immediately, they may coil up, hiss and strike out very quickly.
The Russell's Viper is considered by many to be the most dangerous snake in the world because its venom is highly lethal and it has a much more aggressive temperament than other venomous snakes. This leads to it causing more deaths per population size per area than any other snake. When the Russell's Viper bites a victim, it can transfer a large amount of venom into a single bite. ...up to 112 mg of venom, which can cause pain, swelling of the area around the bite, vomiting, kidney failure and an inability for the blood to coagulate. These symptoms or even death can occur very quickly, within two and a half to 10 minutes from the time of first being bitten. Luckily there is a polyvalent antivenin serum that, if administered in time, can keep a Russell's Viper bite from being fatal.
Some of the symptoms from a Russell’s Viper bite include pain lasting for 2-4 weeks (this should be an indication of how venomous these guys really are), drop in blood pressure and heart rate, bleeding of the gums, vomiting, swelling, and of course death may occur over two weeks after the bite. Even if you do survive the deadly bite there can be life long complications such as renal failure and a total lack of blood coagulation. Interestingly enough males bitten by this snake may lose their facial hair, have decreased libidos and actually have a reduction in male hormones.

Yeah, he is a mean one. I wonder how the anti-venom works if you only have ten minutes....

We have a lot of golden tree snakes here and although they aren't too dangerous, they do like to attack and strike multiple times. Made the mistake of throwing a shoe at one and saw how agitated they can get. He must have struck at my shoes six or seven times.

Been having a common dark grey grass snake hanging out in our storage area and one day he cruised right by me with me stamping my feet. This morning I found him curled up in my PVC fitting box as I was reaching in. Since he didn't seem to have any fear of us humans, I thought better to dispatch him before the wife gets nipped. Killing a snake now and then is good practice because if you ever do get bit, bringing in the perp in with you is almost required to get the right anti-venom. Snake-do-gooders say don't kill them, which is okay, but I would rather have at least a little practice.
