MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The chief justice of the Philippine Supreme Court has testified at his impeachment trial that he did not violate any laws when he failed to declare $2.4 million in bank accounts.

Renato Corona invoked the bank privacy law that protects foreign deposits from disclosure. Several senators and prosecutors who want Corona removed from office on charges of betraying public trust said Friday that he violated the constitution that says public officials must declare all their assets.

The politically charged trial has entered its final phase and a decision is expected next week.

Corona’s impeachment has become a focus of President Benigno Aquino III’s anti-corruption effort. Corona has accused Aquino of threatening democracy by conspiring to have him fired.

It's actually 28.9 million dollars in Filipino bank accounts only, not counting additional millions in houses, here and in the US. All on a monthly salary of $980 dollars. Fucking great financial manager.....

I don't think so. It's a key link in Aquino's efforts to take down Arroyo and her husband. Aquino has built his presidency around getting Gloria, the most corrupt president (in my opinion, and I have been here for every one since Marcos) ever in the Philippines. If Corona falls, Gloria and Mike follow. He will give this case a full court (no pun intended) press.

The vote is in. Corona guilty - 19 to 3. Only 16 guilty votes were required for impeachment. The first high-ranking Philippine government official ever to be impeached. So now he is out as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is barred from ever again holding any public office. Next question is "will criminal charges now be filed"? My guess is yes, once again to strengthen the President's campaign to crush Arroyo, her husband and their supporters.

In addition to the obvious good things about this verdict, I also just raked in about $400 in bets, all against Filipinos, who kept telling me I just didn't understand the system.
