Red Bull co-founder Chaleo Yoovidhya is the third wealthiest person in Thailand and ranks 205th on the list of the world's richest billionaires, with $5 billion. He was in 208th spot in 2011.

Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim is the world's richest man for the third year in a row. His net worth is estimated at $69 billion by Forbes magazine.

Former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates is runner-up, with $61 billion, followed by billionaire investor Warren Buffet, with $44 billion.

I think someones missing at the top of the list, but if i rember rightly if you name him, a siamse twin will come along and hit you.

But lets stick to those named in the list and many of the others, its clear that to become one of the super rich what you really need is to create a business in a poorly regulated country and get the government to give you some natural reasource so you can get rich by stealing from everyone in the country and keeping most of the money you get for selling it. And for those who cannot pull off this stunt, just get a government /licence, telecoms, alcohol, land...... And impose a keep a decent profit margin otherwise known as the rich richer 'tax' on the entire population.

By fair means and fowl (snigger), Dhanin has built a formidable agri-industrial & retail empire. Last thing I knew CP was the worlds largest chicken processor- thanks to it's operations in China, and Tesco Lotus & 711 aren't exactly chicken feed either. Impressive.

I think its inevitable that once you decide to have a controlled economy where connections rather than efficacy are the real driving forces to business success, you end up with a bunch of empire building Arthur Daly's running the show. After all these are the people who understand that the true path to wealth is finding some politicians who's primary interests in power, stuffing their mouths and feeding their pricks, you can finance with a small percentage of what you make from the inefficiencies they create for you.

As I understand in the case of CP, their china operations are now somewhat bigger than their thai. I gather its a result of the trade agreement between china and thailand.... where all import duties/tariffs were removed from chinese imports in exchange for thai businesses being allowed to operate in china. Quite clever of china really, if chinese imports start to seriously hurt thailands farmers and sme's there's nothing the thai government can do about it that would not seriously harm the really important people like the boss of CP.

It's a bit of stretch to call Dhanin Chearavanont the "richest man in Thailand," if you actually have to be in, not to mention of, Thailand for that distinction.

True, they have large agro and motorbike factories in China.

I suspect they are trying to get big in Malaysia as well.
My neighbour is vice president of CP and he is based in Malaysia unless he comes home to visit his family.

Similar to landed aristocracy in Europe, it's pretty difficult to quantify the actual net worth of the handful of massive land holding families in Thailand. Much easier to value shares than millions of Rai, used for many and varied purposes.
